Mumbai – In a significant milestone for its Indian operations, Škoda Auto has unveiled the all-new Kylaq, the company’s first sub-4m SUV, marking a global debut ahead of its anticipated launch in January 2025. Priced competitively from INR 7,89,000, the Kylaq aims to attract a diverse range of customers in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.
The Kylaq is designed with Indian consumers in mind, combining spacious interiors with a segment-leading boot capacity of 446 litres, making it ideal for urban and rural driving alike. It boasts impressive driving dynamics, a robust safety framework, and a powerful 1.0 TSI engine that delivers 114 HP of power and 178Nm of torque, available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Škoda Auto, emphasized the importance of the Kylaq in the company’s strategic vision for India, stating, “This SUV represents our commitment to making European technology accessible to Indian customers. With a blend of innovative design and practical features, we are poised to make a significant impact in a segment that accounts for half of new vehicle sales in the country.”
The naming of the Kylaq was inspired by a nationwide campaign that engaged Indian consumers, reflecting the brand’s commitment to local preferences. Derived from the Sanskrit word for crystal and linked to the sacred Mount Kailash, the name represents a blend of tradition and modernity.
The vehicle is equipped with a comprehensive suite of over 25 active and passive safety features, including six airbags, advanced traction control, and electronic stability systems, ensuring peace of mind for drivers and passengers alike. Martin Jahn, Škoda Auto Board Member for Sales and Marketing, noted that the Kylaq’s introduction is a key component of Škoda’s regional sales strategy, which aims to enhance its market presence in India significantly.
A host of modern conveniences sets the Kylaq apart, including segment-first features like six-way electric seats with ventilation and a spacious boot that expands to 1,256 litres with rear seats folded. Additional offerings include advanced climate control, leatherette upholstery, wireless connectivity options, and a high-tech infotainment system with a 25.6cm display.
With an eye on sustainability, Škoda’s Chakan plant operates on 30% solar energy, aiming to increase this to 75% by 2026. The manufacturing process emphasizes eco-friendliness, earning certifications for zero waste to landfill and zero liquid discharge, alongside the planting of over 660,000 trees.
Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, expressed excitement about the Kylaq’s potential, stating, “This launch marks a pivotal point in our journey in India, providing a unique blend of innovation, safety, and driving pleasure that is tailored for Indian customers.”
As Škoda Auto looks to solidify its presence in the highly competitive SUV segment, the Kylaq stands as a testament to the brand’s dedication to quality, design, and customer satisfaction, setting the stage for a promising future in the Indian automotive landscape.
