Audi has launched a major technology upgrade for its A3 Sportback TFSI e plug-in hybrid, promising more power, increased efficiency, and a significantly extended electric range. With a battery capacity that nearly doubles, the new A3 Sportback can now travel up to 143 kilometers on electric power alone, marking a substantial improvement in its electric driving capabilities. Audi also introduces DC fast charging for the first time, enabling quicker recharging and making long-distance electric travel more convenient.
Enhanced Performance with Dual Powertrains
The heart of the new A3 Sportback TFSI e is its upgraded powertrain. The combustion engine now features a 1.5 TFSI evo2, replacing the previous 1.4 TFSI. This updated engine offers more efficiency, thanks to advanced combustion technology, while the electric motor delivers 85 kW of power and 330 Nm of torque. Together, these components work seamlessly to enhance driving dynamics, with the plug-in hybrid available in two variants: a 150 kW (204 PS) model and a sportier 200 kW (272 PS) version. The latter can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 237 km/h.
Double the Battery Capacity for Extended Electric Range
Audi has significantly boosted the high-voltage battery, nearly doubling its capacity to 25.7 kWh. This upgrade, coupled with improvements in energy storage and cell chemistry, enables the A3 Sportback TFSI e to achieve an electric range of up to 143 kilometers in the WLTP cycle—more than enough for most daily commutes. The battery is efficiently cooled to maintain optimal performance, while the hybrid system’s intelligent drive management ensures that both the electric motor and the petrol engine work in harmony for maximum efficiency.
Faster Charging and Improved Recuperation
For the first time, Audi’s plug-in hybrid models benefit from DC fast charging, allowing the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes at stations offering up to 50 kW of power. Additionally, Audi offers the ability to charge at AC stations with up to 11 kW, ensuring flexibility whether you’re on the go or charging at home. The new A3 Sportback also features enhanced recuperation capabilities, with drivers able to control the level of regenerative braking using steering wheel paddles, a feature inspired by fully electric models.
A Sportier Look and Advanced Features
The A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e1, the sportier of the two variants, comes equipped with Audi’s S line exterior as standard, featuring distinctive design elements such as a black-edged radiator grille and anthracite gray Audi rings. Red brake calipers and darkened rear windows add to its aggressive styling. Inside, black sports seats and aluminum accents emphasize the car’s performance-oriented design.
Availability and Pricing
The A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e2 is priced from €44,200, while the higher-performance 45 TFSI e1 starts at €47,700 (INR 43.41 lakh). Orders for both models open in October, with the A3 allstreet plug-in hybrid variant set to follow later this fall.
Audi’s latest updates to the A3 Sportback TFSI e not only bring cutting-edge technology and improved efficiency but also reinforce the brand’s commitment to delivering dynamic, eco-friendly driving experiences.
