Pune — In a significant step towards fostering skill development among youth, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has introduced a groundbreaking Pickup Truck concept as part of its Student Car Project. This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s “Skill India” campaign, demonstrating a commitment to empowering the next generation of automotive innovators.
This year, a group of Mechatronics students ingeniously combined elements from the Volkswagen Taigun SUV and the VW Virtus sedan to create a unique pickup truck. The project unfolded over nine months, encompassing various stages from conceptualization to testing. Throughout this process, students engaged in extensive market research, parts procurement, and innovative design challenges, including the 3D printing of components.
Equipped with specialized features such as underbody protection, studded tires, ambient lighting, and distinctive roof-mounted lights, the newly designed pickup truck exemplifies a rugged aesthetic tailored for adventure.
Students received mentorship from experienced professionals at SAVWIPL, who guided them in collaborating with suppliers and industry experts. This hands-on experience not only brought their creative concepts to fruition but also strengthened their understanding of real-world manufacturing processes. The project is part of a broader initiative aimed at aligning with the Union Budget 2024’s focus on youth skilling.
SAVWIPL’s Dual Vocational Training program in Mechatronics, launched in 2011, has become a cornerstone of its educational efforts, successfully upskilling high school students in alignment with Germany’s vocational training model. The 3.5-year full-time course fosters technological creativity and a problem-solving mindset, preparing students for future challenges in the automobile industry.
Globally, Škoda runs an Azubi Student Car Project through its Škoda Academy, reinforcing its commitment to practical training that aligns with national initiatives like “Skill India.” This global approach not only enhances students’ understanding of theoretical concepts but also equips them with essential skills for manufacturing.
Andreas Dick, a member of the Board of Management for Production and Logistics at Škoda Auto a.s., expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “The successful completion of Student Car Project 2.0 in India highlights how young talent can leverage cutting-edge technology and efficiency to create industry-leading vehicles. Our objective is to cultivate an environment where young innovators can thrive and contribute to India’s stature as a global manufacturing hub.”
Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of SAVWIPL, praised the students’ efforts, emphasizing the importance of the Student Car Project as a platform for creativity in mobility solutions. “We are committed to fostering a culture of hands-on learning that empowers local talent within a global context.
