Foundation Laid for Major Highway Enhancements in Pune: A Step Towards Improved Connectivity

In a significant move to bolster road infrastructure in Maharashtra, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated two major National Highway projects in Pune. The ceremony was attended by notable figures including Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol.

The first project involves the four-laning of a 13.25-kilometer stretch along the Mohol-Alandi section of NH-965, spanning from Dive Ghat to Hadapsar, with an estimated cost of ₹819 crore. This upgrade is anticipated to significantly alleviate congestion and enhance safety for thousands of devotees participating in the Palkhi Yatra, a revered pilgrimage.

The second project focuses on constructing major bridges over the Mula and Mutha rivers along the Pune-Satara section of NH-48, with a budget of ₹80 crore. This initiative also includes the expansion of service roads from Sinhagad Road to Warje, aiming to streamline traffic flow in the region.

During his address, Gadkari emphasized the transformative impact of these projects on local communities, stating that the improvements will not only facilitate safer travel for pilgrims but will also foster economic growth by improving access for agricultural producers to broader markets. “These developments will be instrumental in connecting devotees to the revered temple of Lord Vitthal, offering them a hassle-free journey,” he noted.

Gadkari also announced upcoming projects, including an elevated corridor in the Nashik Phata Khed section of NH-60, valued at ₹7,500 crore, and a similar corridor from Ravet to Narhe, expected to commence by December 2024, with a budget of ₹5,000 crore. The plans also include elevated corridors along the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur section of NH-548D and the Pune-Shirur section of NH-753F, further highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity.

The impact of these initiatives extends beyond travel efficiency. By reducing traffic congestion and improving safety, they are set to decrease the number of accidents in the Pune, Satara, and Solapur districts. Additionally, the construction will provide dedicated walkways for pilgrims, ensuring a safer and more pleasant experience during the Palkhi procession, which sees participation from approximately 9-10 lakh Warkaris annually.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by various dignitaries, including Minister of Higher and Technical Education Chandrakant Dada Patil and MP Supriya Sule, signifying the collaborative effort behind these ambitious projects aimed at transforming the transportation landscape in Maharashtra.
