In a surprising turn for compact SUV enthusiasts, the Suzuki Hustler, a popular kei car from Japan, was recently spotted undergoing tests in New Delhi. The sighting marks the first time the second-generation Hustler has been seen on Indian roads, sparking speculation about its potential entry into the Indian market.
The Suzuki Hustler, first introduced in 2014, is a crossover SUV-styled kei car designed for urban drivers. In Japan, it’s known for its impressive fuel efficiency of 25 km/l, making it a popular choice for city commuters. Priced at around 1,518,000 yen (approximately INR 9 lakh), it offers a compelling balance of affordability and performance.
Built on Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform, the Hustler features a mild hybrid system with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), giving drivers the choice between front-wheel and all-wheel drive options. It is powered by a water-cooled, 4-stroke, inline 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine, producing 63 horsepower and 98 Nm of torque, ensuring a smooth yet peppy drive. The vehicle only comes with a CVT transmission, aligning with its urban-friendly design.
With a compact length of 3.4 meters and a weight of just 890 kg, the Hustler is designed for tight city spaces while maintaining the rugged looks reminiscent of Suzuki’s iconic Jimny.
The Hustler has been a hit in Japan since its second-generation launch in January 2020, surpassing its initial sales targets. Suzuki had to raise its monthly sales goal from 5,000 to 6,000 units in response to high demand, signaling strong market interest.
Could the Hustler’s mix of efficiency, compactness, and affordability make it a success in India? Time will tell.
