Grand Prairie, Texas – In a groundbreaking move, Memorial Hermann Life Flight® has announced the acquisition of one H160 and four H145 helicopters to modernize its fleet, making it the first emergency medical services (EMS) provider globally to deploy the Airbus H160 for helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS).
Since its establishment in 1976 by the renowned trauma surgeon Dr. James “Red” Duke, Memorial Hermann Life Flight, operated by the Memorial Hermann Health System, has been a lifeline within a 150-mile radius of the Texas Medical Center in Houston. The service has conducted over 166,000 lifesaving missions exclusively using Airbus helicopters.
“By investing in these state-of-the-art helicopters, Memorial Hermann is enhancing its capability to reach and assist more critically ill or injured patients in need of rapid air ambulance transport,” stated Toni Von Wenkstern, Vice President, Trauma, Memorial Hermann Health Systems.
Bart Reijnen, President of Airbus Helicopters, Inc. and Head of the North America region, remarked, “Memorial Hermann Life Flight has consistently set industry benchmarks in HEMS, and we are proud of our enduring partnership. We are committed to supporting them as they integrate these advanced helicopters into their fleet.”
Tom Flanagan, Consultant and Program Director, emphasized the significant advancements offered by the new fleet, “The H160’s cutting-edge technology, enhanced safety features, larger cabin, and increased cargo space, combined with its rapid reconfiguration capabilities, effectively transform it into a mobile intensive care unit.”
The H160 is currently in service across various countries, including the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Japan, Saudi Arabia, France, and several European nations. It is utilized for diverse missions such as energy, private business aviation, HEMS, search and rescue, law enforcement, and military operations. Known for the largest cabin in its class, minimal vibration, flat attitude in flight, and Blue Edge rotor blades, the H160 stands out as the quietest and most comfortable helicopter for both patients and healthcare professionals.
Additionally, the H145 family of helicopters, with more than 1,675 units in service and over 7.6 million flight hours logged, continues to set standards. Powered by two Safran Arriel 2E engines, the H145 boasts a full authority digital engine control (FADEC) and the Helionix digital avionics suite. The helicopter features a high-performance 4-axis autopilot, enhancing safety and reducing pilot workload. Its exceptionally low acoustic footprint and CO2 emissions make it the quietest and most environmentally friendly helicopter in its class.
With this significant fleet upgrade, Memorial Hermann Life Flight is poised to continue its legacy of excellence, ensuring rapid and safe transport for those in critical need.
