New Porsche Panamera Shatters Nürburgring Nordschleife Record

July 15, 2024 — In a remarkable display of engineering prowess and driving skill, the new Panamera top model has set a new benchmark on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Piloted by Porsche test driver Lars Kern, a pre-production version of this high-performance touring saloon completed the iconic circuit 5.64 seconds faster than its predecessor.

Last Friday, Lars Kern clocked a record-breaking lap time of 7:24.17 minutes for luxury-class cars with combustion engines and hybrids in what will be the Panamera series’ future flagship model. This achievement further cements Porsche’s reputation for engineering excellence and high-performance capabilities.

Kern, who previously set class records on the Nordschleife in 2016 and 2020, most recently with the Panamera Turbo S, noted the significant improvements in the new model. “The new Panamera has made significant gains in transverse dynamic capabilities, particularly in technically demanding corners,” he said. “Sections like ‘Hohe Acht’ and ‘Brünnchen’ highlight its greater agility.”

The latest Panamera’s lap time, over five seconds quicker than the previous generation, underscores the consistent advancement of this four-door sports car. Its electric-assisted eight-cylinder combustion engine plays a pivotal role, but it’s not the sole factor behind the improved performance.

“The powertrain, aerodynamics, chassis, and the new ultra-high-performance Michelin tyres all contributed to this record,” Kern explained. He emphasized the impact of the new Porsche Active Ride chassis, which ensures the car remains parallel to the road, enhancing cornering stability and overall body control. “This not only improves day-to-day driving comfort but also significantly enhances performance on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The new Panamera blends the luxury of a touring saloon with the handling prowess of a sports car.”

For safety, the Panamera driven by Kern was equipped with a racing seat and mandatory safety cage but remained otherwise identical to the production model. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, specifically developed for the Panamera, and the optional Carbon Aerokit, which eliminates lift on the front axle, along with the adaptive 4-way rear spoiler’s Gurney flap, all contributed to generating the necessary downforce and optimizing aerodynamic balance.

This impressive performance on one of the world’s most challenging tracks highlights Porsche’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation and performance.
