BMW Launches Fourth-Generation 1 Series at Leipzig Plant, Marking a New Era in Compact Luxury

Leipzig – The BMW Group Plant Leipzig proudly celebrates the production launch of the fourth-generation BMW 1 Series, signaling a significant milestone in the luxury automaker’s compact segment history. The inaugural model, a BMW 120 in Alpine White, is destined for a customer in Germany, boasting combined fuel consumption figures of 6.0 – 5.3 l/100 km (62 miles) and CO2 emissions ranging between 135 – 121 g/km as per WLTP standards.

A Legacy of Excellence

The BMW 1 Series has been a cornerstone of BMW’s compact segment success, with over 1.3 million units manufactured at the Leipzig plant since production commenced with the three-door variant in 2007. The introduction of the new model continues this legacy, ensuring the plant’s high capacity utilization remains steadfast. Petra Peterhänsel, Plant Director, emphasized the importance of the 1 Series in sustaining the plant’s productivity and employment levels.

Upgraded Plant for Enhanced Production

Since 2018, BMW Group Plant Leipzig has undergone substantial upgrades, boosting its annual production capacity to 350,000 units, a remarkable increase of 100,000 units. This enhancement allows for the simultaneous production of four models, including the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, and the MINI Countryman, on a single production line. The plant now produces up to 500 BMW 1 Series vehicles daily, contributing to a total daily output of 1,300 vehicles.

Employment Opportunities

The expansion in production capacity has not only safeguarded existing jobs but also created new employment opportunities. By the end of 2024, the Leipzig plant will employ approximately 7,000 people, with an additional 900 individuals joining the vehicle production team.

Dynamic Design and Advanced Technology

The fourth-generation BMW 1 Series boasts a dynamic design with a strikingly flat front end that sits lower than its predecessor, enhancing its sporty appeal. The forward-leaning radiator grille features an innovative arrangement of vertical and diagonal bars, complemented by standard LED headlights that create a distinctive “four-eyed face.”

At the rear, the vehicle’s pronounced apron with vertical reflectors, two-part rear lights, and a black diffusor-style insert contribute to its powerful stance. Inside, the 1 Series is now leather-free as standard and features the redesigned BMW Curved Display. The optional M Sport Package and M Sport Design equipment further enhance its dynamic aesthetic.

Innovative Contrast Roof Option

A first for the BMW 1 Series, the new model offers an optional contrast roof in high-gloss black. This innovative feature is achieved through an environmentally friendly, overspray-free painting process piloted at Plant Leipzig, minimizing resource usage by eliminating excess paint mist.

Market Launch

The new BMW 1 Series is set for market launch on October 5, 2024, with Germany and Europe, particularly the UK and Italy, being its strongest markets. This new model not only reinforces BMW’s commitment to innovation and quality in the compact segment but also promises to deliver an unparalleled driving experience to its customers.

As BMW continues to push the boundaries of automotive excellence, the fourth-generation 1 Series stands as a testament to the brand’s dedication to combining dynamic design, advanced technology, and sustainable production practices.
