CARMEL VALLEY, Calif., April 9, 2024 – As the 102nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) gears up for an electrifying showdown on June 23, 2024, Hyundai is charging the slopes with its latest high-performance marvel, the Ioniq 5 N. The South Korean automaker announced its bold endeavor to clinch the Electric Production SUV/Crossover record, fielding two 641-horsepower Ioniq 5 N models as part of a formidable four-car lineup.
Till Wartenberg, the visionary head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai, reflected on the brand’s illustrious history at Pikes Peak, a tradition of innovation dating back to 1992. “Hyundai’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric performance is embodied by the Ioniq 5 N, a testament to our pursuit of excellence in electric mobility,” Wartenberg stated. With an eye on the future, the production-spec Ioniq 5 N is poised to showcase the pinnacle of what Hyundai promises to its customers – exceptional performance matched with groundbreaking technology.
Taking the wheel of the electric behemoths are Paul Dallenbach, a veteran of Pikes Peak with eleven victories and an overall record to his name, and newcomer Ron Zaras. Zaras, a former Hoonigan executive turned PPIHC rookie, brings a fresh perspective and a lifelong passion for motorsport to the team. His journey from an enthralled spectator to a competitor at one of motorsport’s most challenging events underscores the spirit of adventure and determination that Hyundai aims to embody with the Ioniq 5 N.
In a prelude to the Pikes Peak challenge, Hyundai is set to unveil a modified version of the Ioniq 5 N, which will take to the track before the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring on May 30. Piloted by motorsport luminaries Dani Sordo and Robin Shute, this version of the Ioniq 5 N is specially prepared to demonstrate the vehicle’s supreme racetrack capabilities and the technological prowess Hyundai has honed on the world stage.
The Ioniq 5 N’s journey to Pikes Peak is as much about technological innovation as it is about heritage. Developed and fine-tuned at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, the vehicle boasts an array of enhancements including World Rally Championship-inspired drive axles, advanced thermal management systems, N-tuned brakes, and an industry-leading regenerative braking force of 0.6G. To meet PPIHC’s stringent safety regulations, the vehicle has been equipped with a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat, Sabelt six-point HANS compatible seat belts, a roll cage, and a fire suppression system, among other modifications.
As Hyundai prepares to paint Pikes Peak in its signature N livery, the automaker is not just competing for a record; it is showcasing the future of electric mobility. With the Ioniq 5 N, Hyundai is charging ahead, setting the pace for what high-performance electric vehicles can achieve on one of the world’s most challenging courses.
