Farnborough, United Kingdom, 23 July 2024 – Virgin Atlantic has announced a significant expansion to its fleet with an order for seven additional A330neo aircraft, underscoring its commitment to fleet modernization and sustainability. This new order brings the airline’s total commitment to 19 A330neos, marking a pivotal step in its ongoing transformation.
The announcement was made during the Farnborough Airshow aboard Virgin Atlantic’s A330neo, affectionately named ‘Ruby Rebel’ and registered as GB-VSRB in honor of the airline’s founder, Sir Richard Branson. This year also marks Virgin Atlantic’s 40th anniversary, adding a celebratory note to the occasion.
Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, remarked, “Today, we finalize our multi-billion-dollar fleet transformation with the acquisition of seven additional A330-900s. These aircraft are beloved by our customers and crew alike. Operating the youngest fleet is a key element in our strategy to decarbonize long-haul aviation, and we are proud to maintain one of the youngest, most fuel-efficient fleets across the Atlantic.”
Weiss highlighted the long-standing relationship between Virgin Atlantic and Airbus, reminiscing about the arrival of ‘Lady in Red’ in 1993 and celebrating ‘Ruby Rebel’ as a symbol of their continued partnership. Over the past three decades, Virgin Atlantic has integrated over 60 Airbus aircraft into its operations, reinforcing a robust and enduring collaboration.
Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Executive Officer, Commercial Aircraft, expressed his gratitude for Virgin Atlantic’s decision to expand its A330neo fleet. “The A330neo not only delivers exceptional operational cost efficiency and a superb passenger experience, but it also significantly enhances fleet efficiency and supports Virgin Atlantic’s sustainability goals. We look forward to many more years of successful partnership,” Scherer stated.
The A330neo aircraft are designed with the award-winning Airspace cabin, offering passengers enhanced comfort, more personal space, enlarged overhead bins, advanced lighting systems, and the latest in-flight entertainment and connectivity options.
Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330-900 boasts a range of 7,200 nautical miles (13,300 kilometers) and superior fuel efficiency. As of June 2024, the A330 Family has received 1,798 firm orders from over 130 customers worldwide, including 319 A330neo orders from 30 customers.
In line with Airbus’s commitment to sustainability, the A330 family can currently operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with a goal to achieve 100% SAF capability by 2030. This initiative is part of Airbus’s broader strategy to enhance the environmental performance of its aircraft and support the aviation industry’s move towards a more sustainable future.
