Savannah, GA, June 18, 2024 – Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) has announced that the first vehicle to roll off the production line at its new Metaplant will be the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5. Production of the award-winning electric SUV is set to commence in the fourth quarter of this year.
The 2025 model of the Ioniq 5, though not yet officially unveiled for the North American market, is eagerly anticipated. HMGMA is currently finalizing preparations and training staff to ensure a smooth start to production. The new plant will handle all trim lines except the Ioniq 5 N and will eventually become the exclusive manufacturing site for Ioniq 5 models destined for the U.S. market.
“This is a very exciting time for HMGMA,” said Oscar Kwon, president and CEO of HMGMA. “We are in the final phase of construction and are getting ready for the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 to roll off the line. It’s the ideal vehicle for us to start production with.”
Hyundai’s electric vehicles have received numerous accolades, with the Ioniq 5 being named Best Electric SUV, Best EV for the Money, and one of the Best Cars for Families by U.S. News & World Report. Cars.com awarded the Ioniq 5 the Best Electric Vehicle title for the second consecutive year. Previous honors include the 2022 World Car of the Year, 2023 MotorTrend SUV of the Year, and 2022 Car and Driver EV of the Year. Additionally, the model has received the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Sales of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 reflect its popularity, with a 43% increase so far in 2024 and an 82% rise in May alone. Hyundai is currently offering a $7,500 cash rebate for buyers of the 2024 Ioniq 5, with lessees eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit.
Hyundai Motor Group is investing $7.59 billion in the development of HMGMA, expected to create 8,500 direct jobs. Additionally, Hyundai and SK On are constructing a $5 billion EV battery cell plant in Bartow County, Georgia, which will employ 3,500 workers. According to a recent study by the Center for Automotive Research, Hyundai’s investments in Georgia are projected to generate nearly 40,000 jobs and $4.6 billion in individual earnings annually.
Future production at the Metaplant will include vehicles from Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia, with additional models to be announced.
