Tumakuru, Karnataka: Toyota Kirloskar Motor has launched a new rural drinking water infrastructure project in Tumakuru district, with plans to install 500 litres per hour Reverse Osmosis water purification units across six locations, benefiting around 9,200 villagers annually across 29 villages.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held in Tumakuru on Saturday in the presence of Shri V. Somanna, Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, Government of India. Mr. Ramesh Rao, Vice President, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, and other senior company leaders were also present.
The RO units will be installed in Beligere, Kamberahatti, Hosahatti, Mudlapalya, Junjappanahatti and Somalapura. Toyota Kirloskar Motor said the initiative is aimed at improving access to safe and hygienic drinking water in rural communities, where clean water remains both a public health priority and, in many places, a daily logistical challenge.
The project is expected to provide families in the region with easier access to clean drinking water and help reduce risks linked to waterborne diseases. In rural India, a functioning water unit can quietly become one of the most important pieces of local infrastructure — less glamorous than a highway, perhaps, but often just as vital.
Speaking at the ceremony, V. Somanna Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, Government of India said, “Development becomes meaningful when it improves the everyday lives of people. Access to clean drinking water is not merely an infrastructure requirement but a necessity that impacts health, education and the well-being of entire communities. This initiative by Toyota Kirloskar Motor will benefit thousands of residents across villages in Tumakuru and create long-term value for the region. I commend the company for its commitment to community development and its efforts towards supporting the aspirations of rural India.”
Vikram Gulati, Country Head & Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “Clean drinking water should never be a privilege; it is a basic necessity that every family deserves. We have seen how access to safe water can positively influence the health and everyday lives of entire communities. The RO units being established in Tumakuru are intended to create lasting value for the villages they serve and support the well-being of future generations. At Toyota Kirloskar Motor, we remain committed to undertaking initiatives that address real community needs and make a meaningful difference where it matters most.”
The Tumakuru project adds to Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s wider community development initiatives beyond its automotive operations. According to the company, it has already established 51 water purification units across India, benefiting more than 3.5 lakh people in 312 villages.
The company said it will continue investing in community infrastructure that addresses essential needs and improves quality of life. For the villages covered under the Tumakuru project, the new RO units are expected to offer not just cleaner water, but also a measure of everyday certainty — something rural households often value more than any grand announcement.
