End of an Era: Nissan Bids Farewell to the R35 GT-R

Tochigi, Japan – After an 18-year reign as one of the world’s most iconic performance machines, Nissan has officially ended production of the legendary R35 GT-R. The final vehicle, a Premium edition T-Spec finished in Midnight Purple, rolled off the line at the Tochigi plant, marking the close of a chapter that began in 2007 and saw nearly 48,000 units produced worldwide.

A Legacy Forged in Performance

From its debut, the R35 GT-R redefined the grand tourer segment, combining refinement and comfort with blistering pace. Powered by the hand-built VR38DETT twin-turbo V6 and the ATTESA ET-S all-wheel-drive system, the GT-R consistently delivered a balance of luxury and track-ready performance. Each of its 48,000 engines was painstakingly assembled by Nissan’s elite Takumi craftsmen, whose signatures adorn every powerplant.

Over the years, output climbed from 353 kW (480 PS) at launch to 441 kW (600 PS) in the GT-R NISMO, complete with GT3-derived turbochargers and race-spec internals. The car also set multiple benchmarks on and off the track—including a 7:08.679 Nürburgring lap in 2013 and a 304.96 km/h Guinness World Record drift in 2016.

Motorsport & Records

The R35 earned accolades across the globe:

  • 5 GT500 class wins and 3 GT300 class wins in Japan’s SUPER GT
  • Victory at the 2013 Blancpain GT Series Pro-Am
  • Bathurst 12 Hour triumph in 2015
  • Multiple Super Taikyu endurance racing titles

Closer to home, at Tsukuba Circuit, the 2020 and 2024 GT-R NISMO shattered lap records, dipping under the one-minute barrier to clock a blistering 59.078 seconds.

Nissan Looks Ahead

At the farewell ceremony, Ivan Espinosa, Nissan President and CEO, paid tribute to the model’s legacy:

“After 18 remarkable years, the R35 GT-R has left an enduring mark on automotive history. This isn’t a goodbye forever—the GT-R will return, reimagined for a new generation.”

Nissan has confirmed that while no successor is finalized yet, the GT-R nameplate will live on, with lessons from the R35 shaping its evolution into a new era of performance, innovation, and electrification.
