In a refreshing twist to the subsidy saga, the Government has clarified that under the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) Scheme, it’s the buyers—not the builders—who get the sweet deal first. That’s right: the electric vehicle subsidy isn’t wired directly to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), but to consumers in the form of upfront discounts at the time of purchase. The manufacturers only get reimbursed after the vehicles hit the road.
Think of it as cashback, but in reverse and on wheels.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, spelled it out clearly: “No OEM subsidy shortcuts. It’s the EV enthusiasts who get the goodies up front, and then the Ministry politely pays the OEMs back.”
Meanwhile, the government hasn’t forgotten that all those EVs need juice. FAME-II has already plugged in Rs. 912.50 crore towards developing public charging infrastructure. Whether you’re in a metro city or a sleepy district that hasn’t seen a traffic jam since the 90s, charging stations are on their way. And since charging infrastructure is an unlicensed business, entrepreneurs are welcome to join the voltage revolution.
So, while carmakers don’t get a direct pat on the back, buyers certainly get a nudge toward the future—and India takes one more eco-friendly step closer to Viksit Bharat@2047.
