Driving India’s Future: PM Gati Shakti Portal Revolutionizes Highway Planning with Data-Driven Precision

In a strategic leap toward seamless infrastructure development, the Government of India has been aligning National Highway (NH) development projects with the principles of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP)—a revolutionary, tech-driven approach aimed at accelerating multimodal connectivity across the nation.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, responsible for the development and upkeep of National Highways, has deeply integrated the PM Gati Shakti NMP into its planning framework. The portal, a dynamic Geographic Information System (GIS)-based platform, offers over 550 data layers—including economic, social, and logistical nodes—empowering planners to optimize highway alignment, project reports, and infrastructure design with unmatched precision.

Key innovations of the Gati Shakti portal include identification of critical infrastructure linkages, detection of missing connectivity gaps, and improved integration of transport networks. This data-backed planning ensures smoother movement of people, goods, and services—leading to enhanced logistics efficiency nationwide.

So far, 115 highway and road projects spanning approximately 13,500 km and valued at ₹6.38 lakh crore have been analyzed using the portal. These projects were reviewed by the Network Planning Group (NPG) under the NMP framework, resulting in substantial reductions in time and cost across various project stages—from design and alignment to clearances and execution.

A dedicated DPR (Detailed Project Report) module has been introduced, further amplifying the portal’s value. With access to real-time data on geographical features, forest zones, and eco-sensitive areas, the portal aids in minimizing ecological disruption and navigating regulatory hurdles—ensuring that projects proceed swiftly and sustainably, with fewer revisions mid-execution.

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Jairam Gadkari, emphasized in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that the Government remains committed to expanding the capabilities of the PM Gati Shakti NMP portal. Through continuous data updates, integration with platforms like the Electronic Detailed Accident Database (eDAR), traffic surveys, and toll data analysis, the portal is evolving into a cornerstone of India’s infrastructure growth strategy.

The PM Gati Shakti initiative represents a paradigm shift in public infrastructure development—merging policy, technology, and spatial intelligence to drive the nation toward faster, smarter, and more sustainable connectivity.
