Toyota India Gears Up for Historic Debut of Gender-Equal Team at Global Ekiden Relay 2024

Bangalore: Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is set to make a powerful statement on health, teamwork, and gender inclusivity at the Global Toyota Ekiden Relay Race 2024. Scheduled for 8th December at Toyota Motor Corporation’s headquarters in Japan, this year’s participation marks a historic first: the inclusion of 10 women employees, creating a balanced 20-member team that will proudly represent India.

The move symbolizes TKM’s evolving commitment to fostering gender diversity and empowering women in the workplace, with half of this year’s team being women. This milestone reflects the company’s efforts to build an equitable and dynamic workforce while championing fitness and collaboration.

The Ekiden relay, deeply rooted in Japanese tradition, stands as a testament to unity, endurance, and resilience—values that resonate across Toyota’s global operations. TKM has embraced this tradition since 2005, using it as a platform to inspire employees to prioritize health and nurture teamwork. The company’s participation in initiatives such as internal marathons and fitness drives underscores its belief in the connection between employee well-being and organizational excellence.

Diverse Talents Represent TKM on a Global Stage

This year’s team members hail from various divisions, showcasing the diversity and collaborative spirit of TKM. Representing the women’s contingent are Lavanya D.N., M. Shendure Madhavi, Ranjitha K., B.L. Chaithra, Saritha, Kavana N.R., Deepika K., Soumya Jammihal, Aishwarya D.J., and Meghana S. Acharya. The men’s team features Gagan B.R., Ramesh Hanamant Singadi, K. Sharanappa, Kishor M.K., M.Y. Sandeep Kumar, M. Uday Kumar, Siddartha M.S., Madhu K.M., Siddaraju C., and Darshan A.

Months of rigorous training, including time trials and endurance-building exercises, have prepared these athletes to shine on the international stage. Beyond enhancing their physical fitness, the preparations have fostered strong interpersonal bonds, embodying the spirit of teamwork that the Ekiden relay celebrates.

A Milestone for Inclusivity and Team Spirit

Commenting on this year’s milestone, G. Shankara, Executive Vice President, Finance and Administration at TKM, remarked, “The Ekiden relay race is a brilliant platform to demonstrate the strength of inclusivity and teamwork. This year’s gender-equal team reflects TKM’s unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for all and fostering an environment of equality. A healthy body and mind are essential for both personal and professional growth, and this philosophy drives our organizational culture.”

Shankara also emphasized that the participation of women in equal numbers reinforces the company’s vision of inclusivity as a driver of innovation and excellence.

As the TKM team gears up for the global competition, they carry not just their training but also the shared values of resilience, health, and collaboration. Their journey to Japan will serve as a beacon of the company’s vision of well-being and inclusivity, inspiring employees and stakeholders alike.

The team’s participation is a reminder that fostering a healthier, more inclusive workforce creates stronger bonds, enhances innovation, and drives success—not just on the race track but in every aspect of organizational life.
