Toyota Electrifies the Iconic Hilux with New 48V Hybrid Model

Diesel Toughness Meets Hybrid Efficiency in the Latest Evolution of the Legendary Pickup

Toyota has unveiled the latest evolution of its renowned Hilux pickup, introducing a 48-volt mild hybrid system to the model for the first time. The new Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V seamlessly blends the rugged reliability the vehicle is known for with enhanced performance and fuel efficiency, without compromising its off-road capabilities or load-carrying prowess.

A Legacy of Durability Meets Modern Innovation

For over half a century, the Toyota Hilux has built an unparalleled reputation for strength and durability, tackling some of the world’s most challenging terrains. The introduction of the 48V hybrid system marks a significant milestone in the Hilux’s evolution, catering to both business users and enthusiasts who demand performance and efficiency.

The new hybrid system enhances the driving experience by delivering smoother acceleration and deceleration, reduced noise and vibration, and improved fuel consumption. Importantly, these benefits come without any loss to the vehicle’s renowned off-road abilities, including its 700 mm water-wading capacity and substantial payload.

Under the Hood: Advanced Hybrid Technology

The Hilux Hybrid 48V retains the trusted 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine but now pairs it with an electric motor-generator, a compact 48V lithium-ion battery, and a DC-DC converter. These components are integrated seamlessly into the existing powertrain, ensuring that the vehicle’s dimensions and structural integrity remain unaffected.

The electric motor-generator not only assists the engine during acceleration, providing an additional 12 kW of power and 65 Nm of torque but also contributes to regenerative braking. This system captures energy during deceleration, improving overall efficiency and reducing fuel consumption.

The hybrid components are engineered to withstand harsh conditions, with the motor-generator positioned to maintain the vehicle’s deep-water wading ability. The 48V battery, weighing just 7.6 kg, is tucked away under the rear seats, preserving cabin space and practicality.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics On and Off the Road

The integration of the hybrid system brings several driving advantages. On the road, drivers will notice smoother acceleration from a standstill and more natural deceleration, contributing to a more comfortable ride. The stop-start system has been refined for quicker and quieter engine restarts, utilizing the electric motor-generator for seamless operation.

Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the improved low-speed torque and the introduction of the Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system. This feature adjusts the vehicle’s drive settings to optimize traction and stability across various surfaces, including sand, mud, rock, dirt, and snow. An Auto mode allows the system to adapt in real-time based on sensor inputs.

Uncompromised Capability and Safety

Despite the addition of hybrid technology, the Hilux’s core capabilities remain intact. The double-cab configuration offers a spacious bed measuring 1,555 mm in length, with a payload capacity of up to 1,000 kg and a towing capacity of 3,500 kg. The vehicle’s body-on-frame construction and ladder chassis continue to provide the strength and durability expected from a Hilux.

Safety has also been a focus in this latest model. The Hilux Hybrid 48V comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense, a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. Features include an enhanced Pre-Collision System capable of detecting pedestrians and cyclists, Adaptive Cruise Control with Road Sign Assist, and Automatic High Beam functionality for improved night driving.

Connectivity and Convenience

Modern drivers will find the Hilux Hybrid 48V well-equipped with the latest in multimedia and connectivity options. The Toyota Smart Connect system provides cloud-based navigation with real-time traffic updates and includes a voice agent for hands-free control. Smartphone integration is seamless, supporting both wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto.

Additionally, the MyToyota smartphone app offers remote access to certain vehicle functions, such as locking and unlocking doors or pre-conditioning the cabin temperature. The app also provides vehicle data and can assist with service scheduling and reminders.

A Step Forward for the Hilux Lineage

The introduction of the Hilux Hybrid 48V represents Toyota’s commitment to evolving its vehicles with innovative technology while respecting the heritage that has made models like the Hilux legendary. By combining the tried-and-tested diesel engine with modern hybrid technology, Toyota offers a vehicle that meets the demands of today’s drivers without sacrificing the qualities that have long defined the Hilux.

This new model is poised to appeal to business users seeking efficiency and reliability, as well as to drivers who require a versatile vehicle capable of handling both daily commutes and challenging off-road adventures. The Hilux Hybrid 48V stands as a testament to Toyota’s ability to blend tradition with innovation, setting a new standard in the pickup segment.
