The companies have formalized their commitment with an additional MOU aimed at deepening their strategic partnership. This agreement is set to explore and expand the scope of their collaboration, with the ultimate goal of achieving a carbon-neutral and traffic-accident-free society.
Nissan and Honda are actively discussing ways to accelerate the development of electric vehicles (EVs) and SDVs through shared research and investment. The focus areas include autonomous driving, connectivity, and artificial intelligence (AI) — technologies that are crucial for future vehicle competitiveness and rapid technological innovation.
Key Collaboration Areas:
1. Joint Research on SDV Platforms:
Nissan and Honda will jointly develop foundational technologies for next-gen SDV platforms. This research is expected to conclude within a year, potentially paving the way for mass production.
2. Battery Technology:
Recognizing batteries as critical EV components, the partnership will explore mutual supply and shared specifications to diversify investment, reduce costs, and offer a range of battery options. Post-2028, Nissan will consider sourcing lithium-ion batteries from L-H Battery Company, Inc., a Honda and LG Energy Solution joint venture, for North American EVs.
3. e-Axles Development:
The companies plan to unify their e-Axle specifications for future EVs, starting with shared motors and inverters, the core components of e-Axles.
4. Mutual Vehicle Complementation:
Nissan and Honda will assess the complementing of each other’s vehicle models globally, focusing on both internal combustion engines and EVs. This includes short-term and long-term perspectives, and an agreed-upon product review system.
5. Energy Services and Resource Circulation:
In Japan, both companies will explore collaboration in energy services, including charging infrastructure, energy equipment, battery utilization, and charging services.
