In a significant move aimed at tackling the persistent issue of highway clogging, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a series of measures to address ribbon development, unauthorized parking, and encroachments along National Highways (NHs). These efforts are set to transform the landscape of India’s roadways, enhancing both safety and traffic flow.
The Ministry, with substantial support from State Governments, has been actively identifying and removing encroachments on NH rights of way. This initiative aims to reclaim public space and ensure highways remain unobstructed and safe for commuters.
Citizen Empowerment Through Technology
A standout feature of this initiative is the introduction of a new tool within the “Rajmargyatra” mobile application. This tool empowers citizens to report unauthorized occupations on National Highways directly to the authorities. By enabling users to flag such incidents, the Ministry not only encourages public participation but also strengthens the safety and efficiency of highway travel.
The application serves as a bridge between the public and the government, ensuring swift action against any violations. This innovative approach highlights the Ministry’s commitment to leveraging technology for better governance and community involvement.
Infrastructure Development to Alleviate Congestion
To address congestion, especially in stretches passing through built-up areas, the Ministry is prioritizing the construction of bypasses, elevated roads, flyovers, underpasses, and foot overbridges. These infrastructure projects are selected based on traffic volume, techno-economic feasibility, land availability, and funding. The development of new bypasses and highways as access-controlled facilities is a strategic move to prevent the recurrence of ribbon development.
Such projects are crucial for the seamless movement of traffic and the reduction of congestion in urban areas. The focus on access-controlled highways ensures that future developments do not impede the flow of vehicles, thereby maintaining the efficiency of the road network.
Statewide Efforts and Special Drives
A special drive has been initiated to remove encroachments from National Highways across various states, including Uttarakhand. The Ministry has also sought the cooperation of state governments, urging local revenue and police authorities to support Highway Administrations in enforcing the Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002. This coordinated effort is essential for the sustainable management of highway spaces and the prevention of unauthorized occupations.
