Mercedes-Benz Achieves Significant Q2 Sales with Over 600,000 Vehicles Sold
Mercedes-Benz Group has reported robust sales figures for the second quarter of 2024, with a total of 600,100 cars and vans sold. This performance, achieved in a subdued market environment, underscores the company’s resilience and strategic focus on product availability and electrification.
Impressive Car Sales Drive Momentum
Mercedes-Benz Cars recorded sales of 496,700 units in Q2, marking a 7% increase compared to the previous quarter. This uptick was driven by improved product availability, particularly in key markets such as China and the U.S. Top-End vehicle sales saw a 6% rise quarter-on-quarter, bolstered by the popularity of high-tech combustion, battery electric, and hybrid vehicles. Notably, plug-in hybrid sales surged by 27%, reflecting the growing consumer preference for electrified options.
Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, highlighted the shift towards electrification, noting that “every third vehicle ordered in the Top-End segment included at least one individualization option from our MANUFAKTUR program in the first six months.”
Electric Vehicle Sales and Market Performance
Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales reached 45,800 units in Q2. Despite the pace of EV adoption slowing in some markets, the demand for plug-in hybrids rose significantly, contributing to a global sales increase of 27% compared to the previous year. The introduction of new models, such as the E-Class, GLC, and the upcoming electric G-Class, is expected to further boost sales in the latter half of the year.
Regional Highlights
- Europe: Sales reached 157,500 units, with strong demand for battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. In Germany, one in three customers opted for an xEV in the first half of the year.
- China: Sales climbed to 172,600 units, a 2% increase from Q1. The new locally produced E-Class saw sales rise by 41% quarter-on-quarter, and the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class continued to perform strongly.
- U.S.: Sales hit 84,700 units, up 27% from Q1, driven by better product availability and increased demand for plug-in hybrids.
Steady Performance in Vans Division
Mercedes-Benz Vans maintained steady sales with 103,400 units sold in Q2, mirroring Q1’s performance. Despite a challenging environment and model changes, the division achieved strong first-half results. Klaus Rehkugler, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans Sales & Marketing, expressed confidence in the updated models’ ability to strengthen the product portfolio.
Commercial and Electric Vans Lead the Way
Commercial vans remained the dominant segment, with 86,200 units sold. The private segment also showed strong demand, totaling 17,200 units. Electric van sales rose by 75% compared to Q1, driven by the new eSprinter and other electric models. Despite a general decline in the global van market, eVan sales increased by 3% year-on-year.
Overall, Mercedes-Benz’s Q2 performance highlights its ability to navigate a challenging economic landscape, driven by strategic product launches and a focus on electrification. The company anticipates further growth in the second half of the year, supported by new model introductions and expanding market presence.
