Maruti Suzuki Revolutionizes Green Logistics with 2 Million Vehicle Dispatches via Railways

New Delhi, 08 July 2024: Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has marked a significant milestone in green logistics by dispatching over 2 million vehicles using the Indian Railways. This achievement establishes Maruti Suzuki as the first automobile company in India to reach this eco-friendly milestone.

In a decade-long effort, Maruti Suzuki has increased its share of vehicle dispatches through railways from a mere 5% in FY 2014-15 to an impressive 21.5% in FY 2023-24. This six-fold increase has enabled the company to offset approximately 10,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions and save around 270 million liters of fuel over the past ten years. Today, Maruti Suzuki dispatches vehicles to 20 destinations, covering over 450 cities across India through the railway network.

Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, commented on the milestone, stating, “Maruti Suzuki pioneered the use of railways for vehicle dispatches over a decade ago by becoming the first company in India to obtain the Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator license. Our sustained efforts in green logistics have led to remarkable results, including significant reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel savings. With our production capacity set to nearly double to 4 million units by FY 2030-31, we aim to increase railway dispatches to 35% over the next 7-8 years, supporting India’s Net Zero emissions target by 2070.”

The company’s commitment to green logistics was further highlighted earlier this year when Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first automobile in-plant railway siding at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility under the PM Gati Shakti programme. This facility has the capacity to dispatch approximately 300,000 vehicles annually. A similar facility at the Manesar plant is expected to become operational soon.

Maruti Suzuki’s use of the Indian Railways for vehicle dispatches aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #13, which focuses on climate action, and underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable practices in the automotive industry.
