GEORGETOWN, Ky. – In a move that’s sparking excitement across the Bluegrass State, Toyota has announced a whopping $1.3 billion investment in its Kentucky plant, electrifying the local economy with the promise of stable employment and a greener future. This investment is set to supercharge the facility’s capabilities, adding the assembly of an innovative, all-new, three-row battery electric SUV tailored for the U.S. market.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear couldn’t hide his enthusiasm, stating, “When you think of the Bluegrass region and Scott County, Toyota is the powerhouse driving our economy forward. We’re overcharged with gratitude for their continued investment in our commonwealth, powering up high-quality, well-paying jobs for our citizens. A big electric thank you to Toyota for plugging into Kentucky’s future with yet another billion-dollar boost.”
The project accelerates Toyota Kentucky’s total investment to nearly $10 billion, showcasing an unwavering commitment to crafting high-quality vehicles and ensuring job security for nearly 9,400 team members. These team members have been the driving force behind assembling some of Toyota’s most iconic models, including the Camry, which has reigned as America’s favorite passenger car for an impressive 22 years in a row.
Kerry Creech, president of Toyota Kentucky, charged up the announcement with his remarks: “Today’s electrifying announcement is a testament to our dedication to vehicle electrification and our investment in the U.S. We’re gearing up for the future, empowered by generations of team members who’ve built the foundation for this moment. We’re committed to driving into the future with our community at the wheel, ensuring our company continues to thrive for generations to come.”
The investment isn’t just about electrifying vehicles; it’s also about energizing the community through substantial educational and workforce development contributions. Toyota’s legacy in Kentucky, spanning nearly four decades, has been marked by over $154 million in local donations, fueling 48 education and workforce training initiatives in 2023 alone, and helping to build a strong foundation for the state’s future.
Chris Cohelia, a group leader at Toyota Kentucky, reflected on his journey with the company: “Joining Toyota 26 years ago, I’ve seen firsthand the company’s dedication to its employees. The stability, competitive pay, and growth opportunities charged my career. It’s electrifying to be part of the team that will assemble Toyota’s first battery electric vehicle in North America.”
This investment is part of Toyota’s broader $17 billion electrification effort across its U.S. operations since 2021, highlighting a commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability. As Toyota plugs into the electric vehicle market, Kentucky is set to become a powerhouse in the future of automotive manufacturing.
