Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has added a fresh twist to the premium hatchback game by introducing the Altroz iCNG AMT, making it India’s first and only premium hatchback to offer an automatic transmission with a CNG powertrain. In simpler terms, your left leg can finally retire from bumper-to-bumper duty while your wallet continues to enjoy CNG savings.
Priced at ₹8.69 lakh, the new Altroz iCNG AMT expands Tata Motors’ already crowded “something for everyone” powertrain buffet, which includes petrol, diesel, and CNG options. The addition of AMT to the iCNG lineup aims squarely at urban buyers who want lower running costs without constantly playing “clutch-brake-clutch” during city traffic jams.
The Altroz iCNG AMT is powered by Tata’s 1.2-litre Revotron iCNG engine that produces 73.5 PS and 103 Nm in CNG mode. The biggest highlight, however, is the integration of an AMT gearbox, bringing convenience to the growing number of CNG adopters in India. According to Tata Motors, CNG penetration rose from 19% in FY25 to 22% in FY26, proving that Indian buyers are increasingly treating CNG not just as a budget option, but as a mainstream fuel choice.

Speaking about the launch, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said the company is responding to a growing demand for convenience-oriented CNG vehicles. He added that the Altroz continues to focus on balancing efficiency, practicality, and safety without compromising on premium appeal.
One of the Altroz iCNG’s strongest talking points remains its twin-cylinder technology. Unlike conventional CNG cars that often turn the boot into a cylinder showroom, Tata’s twin-cylinder setup is neatly packaged under the luggage floor. This allows the Altroz iCNG to retain a usable 210-litre boot space, while petrol and diesel versions continue to offer 345 litres. In Indian family terms, that means there’s still room for luggage, shopping bags, and at least one mysteriously oversized suitcase from a relative.
The Altroz iCNG AMT also gets a single advanced ECU setup that enables seamless switching between petrol and CNG modes. Tata says the hatchback can directly start in CNG mode, improving convenience during daily usage and long-distance driving alike.
On the design front, the Altroz continues with its premium styling updates, including flush door handles, connected LED tail lamps, LED headlamps with DRLs, and a modern cabin layout. Inside, the hatchback gets twin 26.03 cm digital displays, a Harman infotainment system, ambient lighting, soft-touch dashboard materials, and lounge-style rear seating.
Safety continues to be one of Altroz’s biggest strengths. Built on Tata’s ALFA architecture using ultra-high-strength steel, the hatchback carries a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating across petrol, diesel, and CNG variants. Standard safety kit includes six airbags, ESP, ISOFIX mounts, and reverse parking sensors. Higher variants also offer features such as a 360-degree HD camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, auto headlamps, and LED fog lamps.
Since its launch, the Altroz has maintained a rather unique identity in the hatchback segment. It remains the only hatchback in India to offer a diesel engine and was also among the first to push innovative twin-cylinder iCNG technology into the mainstream. Now, with the arrival of the iCNG AMT, Tata Motors seems determined to ensure that buyers no longer have to choose between fuel savings and convenience — because apparently, even CNG cars deserve a little luxury now.
