From Plug Points to Progress: India’s FAME Game Goes Full Charge Ahead!

New Delhi, July 25, 2025: In a nation where auto-rickshaws once roared and scooters coughed out clouds of nostalgia, India is now steadily zipping towards a quieter, cleaner future—on battery power, no less. Thanks to the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) and its zesty sidekick, the FAME India Scheme, we might soon trade our petrol station queues for charging station check-ins.

Launched in 2013 with the poise of a well-aimed Tesla coil, NEMMP 2020 set the tone for India’s electric dreams. Think of it as the country’s EV vision board—minus the glitter glue and magazine cutouts.

Under its mighty umbrella, the Ministry of Heavy Industries rolled out the FAME India scheme in 2015. FAME, which stands for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles, has been the silent electric motor behind India’s evolving green commute. It came in two flavors—FAME-I and FAME-II—and both managed to spark quite a charge in the auto industry.

FAME-I (2015–2019):
This was the training wheels phase—gentle, hopeful, and humming with potential. With ₹43 crore pumped into 520 charging stations, the mission was clear: woo the Indian public into choosing volts over vroom. Sure, most people still looked at EVs like confused guests at a tech-savvy wedding, but the movement had begun.

FAME-II (2019–2024):
Now this is where things got juicier than a lithium-ion smoothie. FAME-II wasn’t just a follow-up; it was a full-blown sequel with better funding, clearer goals, and more plug-in drama than an electric soap opera. A mammoth ₹912.5 crore was sanctioned for 9,332 public charging stations across the country—and as of June 30, 2025, 8,885 are already up and buzzing.

These numbers aren’t just impressive—they’re electrifying. From the bustling bylanes of Tier-3 towns to the parking lots of Tier-2 cities, India’s EV transformation is now less of a luxury statement and more of a lifestyle choice.

According to Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, who dropped this voltage-laced update in the Lok Sabha via written reply today, the schemes have been instrumental in putting the ‘e-motion’ in motion.

With domestic EV tech development, demand aggregation, hybrid innovation, and manufacturing ecosystems all now part of India’s vehicular vocabulary, we’re inching closer to our commitments made under COP21. Zero-emission dreams are finally finding sockets of reality.

So, while the world debates the future of mobility, India has already booked its EV ticket. And if FAME continues to shine, the only smoke on our roads will be from spicy roadside pakoras, not exhaust pipes.
