Mumbai: Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) has kicked off December with a headline that’ll make even hybrid SUVs raise an eyebrow. The all-new Tata Sierra, powered by the latest 1.5L Hyperion petrol engine, has officially entered the India Book of Records for achieving the maximum fuel efficiency in 12 hours — a jaw-dropping 29.9 kmpl.
Yes, you read that right. A petrol SUV is now doing mileage that can make scooters feel insecure.

The record-setting feat took place at NATRAX Indore on November 30, 2025, where the Sierra ran continuously from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, stopping only for quick driver swaps. The run was executed by the Pixel Motion team, who apparently spent their Sunday driving in circles while sipping less fuel than a weekend lawn mower. By evening, the achievement was officially validated — and India had a new efficiency champion.
Hyperion Engine: Efficiency Meets Enthusiasm
At the centre of this triumph is Tata’s brand-new 1.5L Hyperion petrol engine, which seems to have discovered the secret formula of “more go, less gulp.”
With its advanced combustion system, torque-rich performance band and friction-optimised architecture, the Hyperion kept the Sierra running smoothly and efficiently throughout the 12-hour marathon. No drama, no thirst — just clean, consistent performance.
TMPV’s Chief Product Officer, Mohan Savarkar, couldn’t have been prouder.
“Setting a national efficiency record so early in the Sierra’s journey is a proud moment for us. The Hyperion engine platform was built to push the boundaries of what petrol powertrains can achieve, and this milestone validates that effort. It strengthens the Sierra’s value proposition for customers and underlines TMPV’s commitment to bringing advanced, efficient and future-ready technologies to the market,” he said.
Translation: We made it efficient. And fast. And we’re not done yet.
Oh, It’s Efficient AND Fast?
Just in case anyone thought the Sierra was only here for economy bragging rights, it also clocked a top speed of 222 km/h at NATRAX under specified test conditions in a parallel run.
That’s right — the same SUV that sipped fuel for 12 hours also decided to stretch its legs and outrun most express trains.
Before you get too excited, TMPV clarified that customer cars will be electronically limited to 190 km/h, because safety first… bragging later.
Important Notes (aka Tata’s Gentle Reality Check):
- The efficiency and top-speed tests were conducted by trained experts in controlled environments.
- TMPV strongly advises customers not to attempt such feats — unless they enjoy breaking rules, warranties, or both.
- Always follow traffic laws and drive responsibly. The Sierra may be a record-setter, but your neighbourhood roads are not NATRAX.
