India Crosses 1 Million EV Sales in FY 2024-25: MHI’s Green Mobility Drive Shifts Gears Towards Net Zero

In a landmark achievement that underscores India’s growing momentum in clean mobility, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has announced that electric vehicle (EV) sales in the country have surpassed the one million mark in the Financial Year 2024-25. This remarkable feat aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious vision for a Net Zero India by 2070 and a self-reliant, sustainable future under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

India’s e-mobility revolution is accelerating on the back of government-led initiatives, innovation in electric transportation, and increasing environmental consciousness. The latest data paints a promising picture:

  • Electric two-wheeler (e-2W) sales: 11,49,334 units in FY 2024-25 — a 21% jump from the previous year’s 9,48,561 units.
  • Electric three-wheeler (e-3W L5) sales: 1,59,235 units sold — a robust 57% increase over FY 2023-24’s 1,01,581 units.

At the core of this EV surge lies the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme, notified by MHI on September 29, 2024. With a financial outlay of ₹10,900 crore until March 31, 2026, this scheme aims to boost indigenous EV manufacturing, create a robust supply chain, and support buyers with financial incentives.

Under the scheme’s umbrella in FY 2024-25 alone, VAHAN portal records show:

  • 10,10,101 electric two-wheelers registered
  • 1,22,982 electric three-wheelers registered

Commenting on the milestone, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy, stated:

“Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi avaru, India is driving the global transition to sustainable mobility. The achievement of over 1 million EV sales is a testament to the success of MHI’s flagship schemes, including FAME, EMPS, and PM E-DRIVE. This milestone reaffirms our commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and self-reliant India.”

The environmental and economic impact of this push is already visible:

  • Daily fuel savings: 8.55 lakh litres
  • Total fuel saved: Over 15.77 crore litres
  • Daily CO₂ reduction: 12.48 lakh kg
  • Total CO₂ reduced: Over 23 crore kg

The PM E-DRIVE initiative, which also subsumes the short-term Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024, is poised to transform India’s EV landscape further. Beyond vehicle sales, the scheme is expected to spur significant private sector investment, generate employment across the manufacturing and infrastructure segments, and bolster India’s position as a global leader in green mobility.

Adding to this momentum is the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Auto Scheme, which has attracted participation from 18 Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), thereby reinforcing India’s journey towards a technologically advanced and self-reliant automotive ecosystem.

With over a million EVs already on Indian roads this fiscal year, the road ahead looks promising, clean, and electric.
