New Delhi: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has taken a significant leap in supporting India’s ‘Make-in-India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives by localizing over 1,200 components and assembling EV battery packs at its state-of-the-art Chennai facility. With 92% localization achieved in manufacturing, HMIL’s roadmap underscores the company’s dedication to reducing import dependence and strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem.
Localized Battery Packs Powering the Future
HMIL, in collaboration with Mobis India Limited, has inaugurated a cutting-edge battery-pack assembly plant at its Chennai facility. This facility boasts an initial capacity of 75,000 battery packs annually and supports diverse technologies like NMC and LFP batteries. The Hyundai Creta Electric, the first EV to feature these locally assembled battery packs, represents a pivotal step in making sustainable mobility more accessible and affordable.
Economic and Employment Boost
Since 2019, HMIL’s localization efforts have yielded foreign exchange savings of over $672 million (INR 5,678 crore), showcasing the economic benefits of indigenization. Furthermore, the initiative has created direct employment opportunities for more than 1,400 individuals, further strengthening India’s skilled workforce.
Strategic Component Localization
HMIL’s Localization Team works with 194+ vendors to source 1,238 parts for its vehicles. The company has achieved 100% localization for components such as alloy wheels, alternators, disc brakes, and clutch assemblies. Additionally, advanced technologies like Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), NOX sensors, and panoramic sunroofs have been successfully indigenized for the first time in India.
Leadership Perspective
Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer at HMIL, remarked, “Our indigenization strategy aligns with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make-in-India’ visions. By leveraging local resources and engineering expertise, we are proud to introduce the Creta Electric with battery packs assembled right here in India, setting a benchmark for localized innovation.”
Looking Ahead
In addition to its Chennai operations, HMIL plans to deepen its localization efforts for its upcoming manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra. With this expansion, HMIL is poised to make India a hub for world-class automotive production and sustainable EV solutions.
By combining advanced technology with local ingenuity, Hyundai Motor India Limited is not only driving innovation but also accelerating India’s journey towards self-reliance in the global automotive landscape.
