Bihar’s Expanding Expressway Network: New Projects and Challenges Revealed

Bihar’s transportation infrastructure is undergoing significant transformation, with key expressway and highway projects moving forward despite challenges. In a recent statement to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, highlighted the progress of several crucial projects that are set to improve connectivity within the state and beyond.

Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have already been awarded for major corridors including the Gorakhpur-Siliguri, Raxaul-Haldia, and Patna-Purnia routes. These corridors are expected to enhance regional connectivity, facilitating smoother travel and boosting economic activities.

In addition, the construction of a three-lane bridge over the River Ganga at Buxar, part of National Highway 922 (NH-922), has been sanctioned, marking a significant step in improving infrastructure in the region. The project aims to ease traffic congestion and improve the flow of goods and passengers.

Further plans include the development of spur connectivity to key religious and cultural destinations in Bihar, such as Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Vaishali, and Darbhanga. The DPR for these link roads has already been initiated, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing access to these important sites.

However, not all projects are progressing smoothly. The Aamas-Darbhanga National Highway project has faced delays, primarily due to issues with land acquisition, particularly the challenge of obtaining encumbrance-free land. This hurdle has slowed the project’s overall timeline.

These updates were shared by Minister Gadkari in response to questions raised in the Rajya Sabha, shedding light on both the advancements and challenges in Bihar’s infrastructure development. The ongoing efforts reflect the government’s ambition to enhance connectivity in one of India’s rapidly growing states.
