State-of-the-Art Facility to Produce Combustion, Hybrid, and Electric Cars with Emphasis on Sustainability
Maranello, June 21, 2024 – Ferrari’s groundbreaking e-building, set to produce internal combustion, hybrid, and Ferrari’s inaugural electric vehicles, was officially inaugurated today with Italian President Sergio Mattarella in attendance. Ferrari’s leadership, including Chairman John Elkann, Vice Chairman Piero Ferrari, and CEO Benedetto Vigna, alongside the Ferrari workforce, welcomed the President.
“We are honored to have President Mattarella with us for the inauguration of the e-building, a plant that combines the centrality of the people in the workplace with respect for the environment,” stated John Elkann. “Investing in our territory is essential to prepare ourselves for Ferrari’s future with confidence and confirms our commitment to Italian excellence and to our country.”
Production Flexibility and Technological Neutrality
The e-building enhances Ferrari’s production flexibility, aligning with the company’s strategy of prioritizing quality over quantity. This facility embodies the principle of technological neutrality, housing the development and production of internal combustion engines, hybrid engines, and electric motors, all designed to deliver Ferrari’s signature driving excitement.
Integrating the production of Ferrari’s entire range in a single building allows for efficient reorganization and reallocation of production activities across Maranello’s facilities. This adaptability will enable Ferrari to respond swiftly to changing production needs.
Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the e-building will also produce key electrical components such as high-voltage batteries, electric motors, and axles, crucial for differentiating Ferrari’s technological prowess and performance.
Environmental Sustainability
Designed to achieve top-tier energy performance, the e-building features over 3,000 solar panels on its roof, generating 1.3 MW of power. Once the trigeneration plant is decommissioned later this year, the building will rely entirely on renewable energy, sourced both internally and externally with guarantees of origin.
Innovative solutions have been implemented to reuse energy and rainwater within the production cycle. Over 60% of the energy used for battery and motor testing will be recovered and redirected into new processes.
Built on redeveloped land north of the Ferrari campus, the e-building replaces outdated industrial structures, minimizing additional land consumption.
Focus on People
Worker training and well-being were prioritized in the building’s design, which includes a dedicated training space. The training program for the new production lines started two years ago, focusing on new skills and processes needed for electric motor production, alongside Ferrari’s traditional mechanical and electronic expertise.
Manufacturing processes feature collaborative robots and digital twins, elevating employees’ roles within the production process to ensure the excellence and attention to detail that distinguish Ferrari.
The facility includes ergonomic workstations, relaxation areas, and optimized lighting to enhance the work environment.
Community Integration
The e-building reaffirms Ferrari’s central role in the local industrial landscape, with continuous investments attuned to community needs. The facility’s integration involved urban redevelopment of over 100,000 square meters and improved road infrastructure, including a 1.5-kilometer bike path and a road serving the site, concentrating heavy traffic around the e-building logistics hub.
Architectural Design
Designed by MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects, the e-building’s rectangular form and opaline glazing façade harmonize with the surrounding landscape. The efficient façade allows natural light to permeate the building, creating a lantern-like appearance at night.
Components of the façade were designed for ease of assembly and maintenance, ensuring cost efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
