Maruti Suzuki Boosts Investment in Gujarat with New Plant and Expanded Production

Gandhinagar/New Delhi – During the ongoing Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, Mr. Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), announced significant new investments in Gujarat, presided over by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The first of these initiatives involves Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’s plans to build a new automobile manufacturing facility in Gujarat. Set to commence operations in the fiscal year 2028-29, this plant is expected to eventually ramp up its annual production capacity to 1 million units, involving an investment of 350 billion rupees, excluding the cost of land acquisition. The exact location of the plant and the models to be produced will be announced in the future.

Additionally, Maruti Suzuki is set to establish a fourth production line at its wholly-owned subsidiary, Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (“SMG”). This expansion, costing 32 billion rupees, is aimed at increasing the production of electric vehicles. Slated to begin operations in FY2026-27, this new line will boost SMG’s annual production capacity from 750,000 units to 1 million units. Collectively, the new plant and the expanded SMG facility will enhance Gujarat’s total annual production capacity to 2 million units.

These developments are part of Maruti Suzuki’s strategic plan to prepare for the expected growth of India’s automobile market, targeting a production capacity of approximately 4 million units in India by FY2030-31. This goal will be supported by the upcoming Kharkhoda plant in Haryana, set to open in 2025, the new Gujarat facility, and SMG’s fourth production line.

Suzuki, addressing the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, emphasized the company’s commitment to offering sustainable mobility solutions tailored for the Indian market. He praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and the supportive environment for manufacturing industries in India. He noted India’s ascent to the third largest automobile market globally and credited the Prime Minister’s progressive policies for this economic growth.

Further, Suzuki discussed plans to launch and export India’s first electric vehicle to European countries and Japan, highlighting the company’s efforts to enhance production capacity. He also detailed the organization’s initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including the use of ethanol, green hydrogen, and biogas production from cow dung.
