A large number of Twitter users have taken to campaigning for Ratan Naval Tata, the legendary Indian businessman and chairman of Tata Trusts, to be conferred with the Bharat Ratna. Now, Ratan Tata has said that this campaign should end and he is happy to contribute in India’s growth.
In a statement on Twitter, Ratan Tata said on Saturday, “While I appreciate the sentiments expressed by a section of the social media in terms of an award, I would humbly like to request that such campaigns be discontinued.”
“Instead, I consider myself fortunate to be an Indian and to try and contribute to India’s growth and prosperity,” said Ratan Tata, reacting to the ongoing social media campaign demanding the highest civilian honour for him.
Ratan got Tata Tea to acquire Tetley, Tata Motors to acquire Jaguar Land Rover, and Tata Steel to acquire Corus, in an attempt to turn Tata from a largely India-centrist group into a global business. He also conceptualised the Tata Nano which was India’s most affordable car.
The 83-year-old heir of the Tata empire is a Harvard Business School graduate who took Tata Industries to the pinnacle of success while leading India’s growth and employment generation.
Social media users have been tweeting since Friday demanding Govt of India confers the Bharat Ratna on Ratan Tata.
“Patriot Sir #RatanTata taught us about the virtue of kindness and generosity. For entire life he continues to build India great by charity and empathy. I request @PMOIndia to honour this Great Man with Highest Civilian Award,” said one such Twitter user.
Another wrote, “SIR RATAN TATA should get BHARAT RATNA from Prime Minister of India.” The hashtag #BharatRatnaForRatanTata started trending on Twitter after motivational speaker Dr Vivek Bindra appealed, “Ratan Tata believes today’s generation of entrepreneurs can take India to next level. We confer the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna for Ratan Tata. Join us in our campaign #BharatRatnaForRatanTata”.
When Tata Motors rolled out the first batch of Tigor Electric Vehicles from its Sanand Plant in Gujarat, regarding which Ratan Tata said, “Tigor indicates a willingness to fast-forward India’s electric dream. The government has set an ambitious target to have only electric cars by 2030.”
