The all new Skoda ENYAQ iV is seen leading the Tour de France only a day after its official unveil and with massive modifications to the car to become the first all electric car to be the command car at Tour de France.

Skoda has recently unveiled their first battery-electric SUV, the ENYAQ iV and through the brands long association with the the Tour de France, the car has served as the command car for three stages of this year’s race. The car has been specially prepared for its purpose as the command car or ‘red car’ for race director Christian Prudhomme to lead the cyclists in the stages and serve as a total command and control centre for the race director.

Soon after its official unveiling in Prague, the Czech capital the car is seen as the ‘red car’ for one of the biggest sporting events in the world. The vehicle has been fitted with various modifications which include changing the panoramic roof panel to make space for the race director to stand up, several antennas, special sirens, a state-of-the-art radio communications center at the back , and even a refrigerator to keep beverages handy and chilled for visiting dignitaries to the race who often accompany the race director. In addition the vehicle has also been fitted with a special chassis for the event and of course the red paint job.

All these modifications allow the ENYAQ iV to lead the race as command car, allow race director Prudhomme to coordinate with other race officials and ensure smooth running of the competition.

The car is based on the Volkswagen group’s MEB( Modular Electric Propulsion) platform and is the first one from the brand Skoda, which unveiled the vehicle in Prague and only a day later is seen being the command car for the 2020 Tour de France.

“I think we did a good job and I am sincerely happy about it. I have been in the field for a long time, but ENYAQ iV for the director of the Tour de France is still a unique novelty for us, because it will be shown to the public, unlike most of the results of our work.I used to watch the Tour de France even in the past, but now I will not miss a stage.” said Martin Smutny from Best Modell,( the company responsible for the modifications) one of the key people involved in the special modification of the car.

The Skoda ENYAQ iV is the first all electric car to be used as the command car for a competition of the scale of Tour de France and it delivered with unmatched brilliance while leading the peloton bringing a new dawn in the history of the sport, the event and involvement of EVs in such events over the globe. Who knows we might even see an all electric AMG being the safety car for F1 soon.
