Skoda has launched the new Rapid, which comes with an all new engine, the 1L three-cylinder petrol infused with the awarded TSI-Turbocharged Stratified Injection system, which revs up to give an incredible 110PS above 5000rpm and 175Nm torque. It has been mated with a six-speed automatic gearbox, which works in tandem with the engine to make sublime, refined power while being efficient.
The TSI version of the Rapid introduced earlier this year was launched with a manual gearbox and is only now getting the 6-speed automatic which the car shares with its Volkswagen siblings, the Polo and Vento which received the upgrade earlier this month.
In comparison to the outgoing Rapid, the TSI AT, has an upper hand at all aspects, with a 5% gain in power and an astounding 9% rise in fuel efficiency which translates to 16.24 km per litre in the automatic, the manual TSI with 18.97 km per litre surpasses all. According to Zac Hollis, brand director for the Czech automaker, Skoda has raised the benchmark within the segment with the introduction of the TSI AT version of the Rapid. “It is a reliable technology, provides a dynamic drive experience, and deems to be the best seller in its class.” He said.
The car comes with a plethora of features, such as the 6.5inch(or 8inch in the higher trim models) touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, parking camera, automated headlamps and rain-sensing wipers amongst others to match up fairly against its competition in the segment.
The Rapid name carries heavy heritage, being the name used for Skoda Type 301s in 1930s and for the rear engine Rapid Coupe in 1980s. This is the third iteration of the name being used by the Czech marque. Skoda resurrected the name to be given to a car that has proved to be a timeless blend of design, exemplary performance, unmatched build quality and expert craftsmanship and being a much loved offering from the brand. The C segment is a competitive one and Rapid has remained in it with its quality and performance being a treat for customers at competitive pricing.
The present generation which came in late 2016 has been improved ever since and designed to match the rest of Skoda’s portfolio. The car has been a bestseller for Skoda in the domestic market, setting benchmarks for standard safety features, spaciousness, power and fun-to-drive quotient. The Skoda Rapid TSI AT starts at 9.49 lacs across India, keeping up with the policy of ‘One Nation. One Price’, and severely undercutting the competition, to be crowned as the most affordable midsize sedan with automatic gearbox on sale.
