Mercedes’ High Performance division AMG has revealed its lineup of E-Class models for 2020, after the new E-Class was revealed a few days ago. The business sedan makes up the majority of AMG’s lineup, with coupe, cabriolet, saloon and estate models in the lineup. The cars now have improved comfort without any compromise on the sport capabilities. The standard AMG 4MATIC+ all wheel drive with variable traction guarantees superior traction in all weather conditions. The lineup also comes with AMG’s Speedshift 9-speed transmission as standard, a very fast shifter which also keeps the economical. The new AMG’s have new radiator grilles and a redesigned front, so that one can easily distinguish the faster cars from the non-performance versions. The interior also comes with a lot of AMG specific designs, with a new performance steering and the MBUX, which has been tweaked to have a lot of AMG exclusive functions.
The car has both Saloon and Estate versions in international markets. The aerodynamics have been improved with the new front design with large air intakes, and feature two transverse louvres that guide the air in and improvements to the aerobalance of the car and drag resistance. The taillights have been made flatter and sharper. The car comes standard with aerodynamically optimised 20in 5-twin-spoke wheels which come in shades of black and grey.
On the inside, the car mixes the famed luxury of the E-class with the sporty characteristics of AMG. The seats are sturdier yet comfortable for long journeys and come with AMG upholstered onto the backrest. The MBUX in the AMG models has been given a tweak towards the sportier side, with a ‘Supersport’ mode which converts the otherwise serene display into a bolder one with a central Rev counter and making the rest of the screen go blank to avoid distractions. The AMG menu offers engine data, Warm-up, G-meter and racetimer settings. The MBUX comes with voice control as standard, a simple “Hey Mercedes” wakes the system and its intelligent AI based engine is able to recognize speech even if it is muffled or incomprehensible with ease, and also weather forecast to be read out in almost all languages.
A new steering wheel has been added, designed by AMG the wheel is sharper and gives a better feedback than the outgoing models. The buttons are seamless and the rim has a sensor mat to detect when hands are on or off the steering, incase the hands are off for too long the automated braking is activated. The AMG buttons are standard in the E63 S and optional for the base and E 53, the buttons can be operated to choose drive functions and even customize the usability. On either side behind the steering the flappy paddles for the AMG Speedshift MCT transmission are located, which have been made bigger to ensure easier access and operation.
The power in the E63 comes from a 4 litre V8 biturbo tuned by AMG, which gives 612hp and 850Nm of torque in the S model and 571hp and 750Nm torque for the base model. The S model can do 0-100kmph in 3.4 seconds while the base is .1 second slower. The two turbochargers come with twin-scroll technology to make sure there is no turbo lag. A clever cylinder deactivation system works in comfort mode to shut off cylinders to ensure fuel efficiency actively switching between 4-8 cylinders. The E63 AMG S is the only car in its segment to have dynamic engine mounts, which reduce vibrations to increase comfort and ensure rigidity when used in dynamic driving modes with the help of variable stiffness. The smaller sibling, E53 AMG features a 435 hp 3l straight six, uses clever electric implementations to improve efficiency while maintaining AMG level performance, the highly refined engine has instantaneous reactions and negligible turbo-lag.
The transmission features short shift times and comes with double-clutch which makes the process feel seamless. The E63 features a wet multi-disc clutch while the E53 has a torque converter. The gearbox can be operated manually, merely a touch to the paddles engages Manual mode. The suspension in the cars have been updated to ensure stability, comfort and top performance. The new three-chamber air suspension system added is a big reason for the ride comfort and vibration control. The car comes with drift mode in the E63 S thanks to the variable torque distribution.
