HONG KONG. McLaren Hong Kong today premieres the McLaren Elva Gulf Theme by MSO in the city, a celebration of the renewed relationship between McLaren and the Gulf Oil brand and a stunning example of how designs from McLaren’s racing history are inspiring the brand’s modern-day customers.
The unique McLaren roadster in the iconic blue and orange Gulf colours is today showcased in Hong Kong alongside the McLaren Senna, the most extreme personification of the luxury sportscar marque’s DNA.
Hong Kong McLaren owners were experienced an exclusive preview of the breath-taking Gulf-liveried Elva during the 2021 annual parade last weekend, where it took pride of place amongst the more than 83 participating sports cars.
Just 149 examples of the Ultimate Series Elva roadster are available to customer order, making it one of the rarest McLarens ever produced and, with an almost-limitless degree of personalisation available from MSO, each car will have its own unique identity.
“The McLaren Elva Gulf Theme by MSO is a striking celebration of both McLaren’s history in sports car racing and our new partnership with Gulf Oil. At McLaren, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible and to showcase the increasingly extensive range of performance capabilities and personalisation options we can offer to customers. The McLaren Elva Gulf Theme embodies the racing legacy which we have inherited from our founder Bruce McLaren. A racer, innovator and leader, his pioneering spirit lives on through the work we strive to accomplished at McLaren each day in his honour.
George Biggs, Managing Director, McLaren Automotive, Asia Pacific and China
“Hong Kong is home to some of the world’s most discerning owners of luxury sports cars. We are confident such individuals will truly appreciate the significance of the rarity of the McLaren Elva and the iconic reputation of the McLaren Gulf partnership, combined with the infinite bespoke opportunities provided by MSO.”
Max Sutera Sardo, Country Director, McLaren Hong Kong & Macau
McLaren and Gulf recently confirmed the revival of their partnership which renews an historic union between the two brands that originated in the 1960s, a decade when both companies made their first forays into motorsport. Gulf branding appeared on McLaren’s Can-Am, Formula 1 and Indy cars from 1968 to 1973. Two decades later, McLaren F1 GTRs run by customer team GTC carried the famous Gulf livery in global GT racing, including at the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Under the new partnership, McLaren Automotive customers have the opportunity to commission Gulf-liveried cars directly from MSO.
The Elva, which follows the McLaren P1, McLaren Senna and Speedtail in McLaren’s Ultimate Series,
links McLaren’s heritage to its past, present and future with a name and style that recalls the McLaren-Elva sports racers of the 1960s. These were among the first sportscars designed and raced by Bruce McLaren and the company he founded, and the new Elva evokes the true spirit of driving enjoyment symbolised by this era.
In line with McLaren’s on-going commitment to super-lightweight engineering, the new Ultimate Series roadster retains the lightweight construction philosophy of its forebear and is at the cutting-edge of automotive technology. The body design of the screenless, roofless Elva, for example, incorporates an innovative Active Air Management System (AAMS) that creates a virtual canopy over the seamlessly-integrated cockpit. The 815PS and 800Nm developed by the 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine ensure that the Elva delivers astonishing performance and exceptional levels of driving enjoyment.
In Hong Kong, the Elva is showcased alongside its fellow McLaren Ultimate Series model the Senna, another exceptional car inspired by the marque’s grand motorsport tradition. The most track-focused road car ever built by McLaren, the Senna is legalised for road use yet not sanitised to suit it. Delivering the most intense driving experience and allowing the driver to be the best they can possibly be, the Senna more than does justice to arguably the world’s greatest racing driver after which it is named.
