The Tiguan R is fast, and has real sporty elements courtesy of the 4MOTION AWD which has R-Performance torque vectoring which ensures that the SUV sticks even on fast corners.
The Tiguan R is here, and it is the most powerful Tiguan we have seen out of Volkswagen’s plant. It joins Golf R, Touareg R, T-Roc R, and the Arteon R in the R-lineup and shares its engine with the Arteon R. The Tiguan R represents the family SUV’s bolder side, with all the comforts that the Tiguan excels at and has made the car a favourite wherever it has been sold now with the added capability to go at 250kmh.
The engine is the EA888 EVO4- A 2L Four cylinder turbocharged unit which pumps 316hp and 420Nm of torque. The TSI engine is able to maintain max torque from 2,100 rpm to 5,350 rpm constantly which gives the car an explosive but very stable acceleration. The Tiguan R is not a light car, it weighs almost 1.8 tons but the advanced 4MOTION all wheel drive system which now has R-Performance Torque Vectoring makes short work of the grip, and the big and bulky SUV is nimble like a proper small car. The transmission uses two multi plate clutches to improve the power delivery at the rear wheels. The R posts a blistering 4.9s acceleration time to a hundred.
The engineers could have just slapped on the better engine and the sporty all-wheel drive and called it a day, but they took their meticulous time and delivered a true sports car. Instances of this can be seen on the bumper which has aerodynamic inlets, rear diffuser, sports seats with head restraints, digital cockpit with lap timer. The R also has different changes like the 20in alloys wheels with optional 21in Estoril alloys, matt chrome mirrors and the R carbon grey color scheme. The brakes are 18in and are equipped with blue callipers that have the R logo on them, Dynamic chassis control with adjustable shocks with a 10mm lower ride height.
There is also the R mode on the drive selection, which can be accessed via the Blue R button on the steering which also has the paddles for the 7 Speed DSG. The sportiness of the Tiguan is enhanced with the quad exhaust pipes at the rear which can also be equipped with the optional Akrapovič system which is much louder and also gives a slight bump in performance.
The Tiguan is the most successful SUV in Europe, also achieving the unique feat of one car per 35 seconds. The sport seats and the upholstery of the car are even better in the R, with the sportier contrast colors. The cabin houses the touch buttons for various functions, the climate control panel is also touch operated. The infotainment screen is a 9.2in unit and comes with the standard array of smart connectivity features.
The Tiguan has almost no direct rivals, given that it is a luxury/city oriented SUV rather than a performance one that models from other brands tend to offer a much rough ride and absence of comfort. The R however makes the Tiguan a very different animal, the clever use of the torque vectoring all-wheel drive system means it’s just not another SUV with a large engine but a sophisticated machine that can actually be fun to drive.
The Tiguan R is now available to customers and retails at 56,703 Euros (INR 50 lakh) (Price listed for Germany).
