The car has totally different looks and impressive upgrades on the features. Importantly it gets a 204 hp engine in a more premium packaging.
Toyota is all set to update the Fortuner for 2021, but what many of you may not know is that this time around a cosmetic update isn’t the only good news, a new trim level is also being introduced and its not the TRD Sportivo edition but rather a higher trim which is named the Legender, it comes with a much more aggressive styling to project its superiority to the standard Fortuner and a more powerful 2.8 litre engine. The Legender also comes with updated features both inside and outside the cabin.
The Legender will debut in India along with the 2021 Fortuner which also gets some cosmetic tweaks. The front fascia is completely different, that gives it an enhanced muscular look and thicker headlamp assembly with Dual-LED projectors and DRLs, and a large grille in Black Mica shade below the bumper improving the high stance of the SUV. It’s actually easy to believe that Toyota designers took a page out of their luxury division Lexus book, as the car looks properly sharp and imposing like the Lexus RX which we know is a brilliant looking car. The turn indicating lights are also sequential, like the upmarket vehicles.
The car even features new 20 Inch wheels while the taillamps remain the same to keep the car a relation of the Fortuner. On the inside there’s a larger 9 Inch infotainment screen( The Standard Fortuner comes with 8 inch) inside which is housed in the new dashboard assembly, that is also available on the new Fortuner, which sees a greater use of Leather and high-quality feel materials inside the cabin along with a reworked design. The infotainment system features Android Auto and Apple carplay and a 360-degree camera system for easier parking and off-roading in the large car. The Legender also has the optitron meter which is a TFT display in the gauge cluster, a Smart key design, ambient lighting, wireless charger and USB charging ports for 2nd row.
The updated feature list also includes a Dynamic Radar controlled Cruise Control system , Lane Departure Warning system with steering assist and a Pre-Collision system. It is also a more convenient car, with the boot access made easier with kick sensor door opening that helps when one has their hands busy.
Now one of the major updates that one will get with the Legender is the more powerful engine, and that might actually be its biggest selling point too. The 2.8 litre unit has four cylinders and is turbocharged which makes a grunty 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque which is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting and steering mounted paddles for better performance. The Legender just as its sibling can be chosen in either 2WD or 4WD configurations, and may also be offered in the 2.4 litre unit that it is sold with in Thailand or the current 2.7 litre unit that is sold in India.
Now the biggest competitor of the Fortuner here is the Ford Endeavour, another car from Thailand and it has been raking in sales to utilize the areas that Toyota lacks in. but with the Legender coming, the Ford does not seem to hold a chance against it, infact price vs specification will be the only reason to go for the Endeavour. This is because the Legender is expected to cost more than INR 40 lakhs, in its lower power and 2WD configuration while the top model with the 2.8 litre unit will be hitting prices of approx 45 lakhs that make it a properly expensive car.
Now 45 lakh Rupees is a big amount, and for someone looking to spend that much money on a car, there are several options like the BMW 3 series, 2 Series, X1, Mercedes C-class, Volvo XC40, Mini Cooper and Toyotas own Camry which is a very popular car. So until the Legender is launched with official pricing, we cannot really comment if the car is a good bet to spend money on.
