Stefano Domenicali, who served as the CEO and President of Automobili Lamborghini, is set to pass on his position to Stephan Winkelmann. The former will take on his new position as a Formula 1 CEO from 2021, while the latter is coming back to his old post that he held for 11 years from 2005 to 2016.
On December 1st 2020, Lamborghini is set to undergo a change of authority as Stefano Domenicali will transfer his power and title of being the CEO and President of one of the biggest luxury and sports car manufacturer in the world. He will be succeeded by a former President and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Stephan Winkelmann. The executive changes open a plethora of new opportunities for the company and it would certainly be interesting to see the direction towards which Winkelmann steers the auto maker’s future.
Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG commented on these new developments, “Stephan Winkelmann has decisively shaped the history of Lamborghini. No one else stands more clearly for the Lamborghini brand, and he is exactly the right person to lead this unique brand into a successful future.”
In addition to accepting this new title, Winkelmann will also continue with his position as the President of Bugatti. Holding the top positions in two world-leading luxury sports car brands comes with its own set of duties and work pressure. However, it seems to be inconsequential to Stephan Winkelmann who has an abundant experience with holding a number of senior positions in the Fiat Group as well. Also, this is not the end of Stefano Domenicali’s distinguished career that has now turned towards Formula 1 to act as its new CEO.
Duesmann conveyed his gratitude and bid farewell to Domenicali by saying, “In the name of the whole management board of AUDI AG, I would like to thank Stefano Domenicali for his superb achievements and his dedication to Lamborghini. In the past four years he has shaped the transformation of the brand and pushed it ahead. We wish him every success in his new role as CEO of Formula 1.”
Lamborghini has high hopes for its new leadership as it was under this person only that the company went on to become a world leading super car producer once before. Under his previous charge, the company introduced many new models in the Gallardo, Huracán and Aventador range. They also introduced many special editions to the market that went on to set numerous sales records for the company. Winkelmann has also been credited for ushering in Lamborghini’s new era with the 2015 production of Super SUV Urus in Sant’Agata Bolognese.
“It is a great honour and pleasure for me to lead these two unique companies with their extraordinary automobiles. I am looking forward to the new challenge. Bugatti stands for the best, most powerful, elegant and luxurious hyper sports cars in the world. Lamborghini is the iconic expression of the most exclusive sports cars demonstrating outstanding design and innovation. Our creativity in both companies is by no means finished and the world is assured some surprises,” said Winkelmann.
Domenicali took his position in Lamborghini after succeeding Winkelmann and carried forward the legacy of his predecessor’s projects. This included the continuation of Super Urus SUV and an increase in the growth momentum set earlier. Creating record breaking sales in 2019, the company accumulated gross revenue of 1.81 billion Euros through its American, EMEA and Asia Pacific markets. Under his leadership, the company hired around seven hundred new employees and sold a total of 8,205 units in a single year.
Stefano Domenicali said, “I will take over new professional challenge in the knowledge that I have experienced an extraordinary organisation and exceptional colleagues: I am very attached to the women and men of Lamborghini. Together we achieved incredible goals, breaking record after record. I leave at a high point for the company, knowing that the solid long-term strategy put in place assures a continued bright future for the brand. I thank Audi and the Volkswagen Group for their continued support during these years of collaboration. Automobili Lamborghini was an exceptional experience for me, both personally and professionally. It has been a true privilege and I wish Stephan Winkelmann great success in leading this fantastic brand.”
The new position holder at Lamborghini has an impressive portfolio of past experience as not only the President of Bugatti Automobiles since 2018, but also as a CEO of Quattro GmbH in 2016. During these times Stephan Winkemann displayed the immense experience he gained while holding top positions at globally prominent automobile companies. Past experience aside, we will keep an eye on how the new President leads Lamborghini and what new developments unfold under his guidance. An individual being offered high-ranking positions at two of the biggest sports car companies in the world is already a testament of the person’s ability. It is a good time for Lamborghini to look forward to its future while Bugatti can keep counting on its President to lead the company, as he has been since 2018.
