Toyota’s all-new Kluger large SUV has arrived in Australia sporting a stylish sculpted look, significantly improved safety features, enhanced driving dynamics and for the first time in Australia, a hybrid powertrain.
The fourth-generation of one of Australia’s favourite family seven-seat SUVs has raised the bar, with the all-new model offering customers a more premium, refined and sustainable vehicle.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the addition of hybrid to Kluger further demonstrated Toyota’s commitment to delivering on electrified options in its line-up.
“Kluger is now the eighth Toyota model in Australia that offers a fuel-efficient, environmentally-conscious, hybrid drivetrain and as our sales success proves, it is still currently the leading option for environmentally sustainable transport,” Mr Hanley said.
“While Toyota is continuing to develop a range of alternative powertrains to meet our sustainability goals into the future, right here, right now, for this market, we believe a petrol electric hybrid meets the needs of families for a practical and affordable vehicle perfectly.
“With this all-new generation offering substantially improved driving dynamics, a larger and more refined cabin, a stylish new look and the latest in safety technology, it really is the ideal large SUV wherever your journey takes you… and your family,” he said.
The all-new model is available in three trim levels – GX, GXL and Grande – in petrol 2WD guise or hybrid or petrol AWD configuration.
The new hybrid system combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine with three electric motors that generate a maximum combined output of 184kW that drives through an advanced electric e-Four AWD system.
At the same time, it delivers a combined cycle fuel consumption as low as 5.6l/100km with combined CO2 emissions of just 128g/km.
Driving through an electronic continuously variable transmission (e-CVT), the e-Four AWD system allows up to 100 per cent of drive to be sent through the front wheels or up to 80 per cent through the rear, depending on conditions, with a Trail mode for more challenging off-road environments.
The 218kW/350Nm V6 petrol engine maintains the same maximum outputs as its predecessor but further refinement has improved fuel economy by between 4 and 7 per cent.
V6 Petrol versions are offered with two AWD systems that can split torque from 100 per cent to the front axle and 50:50 front to rear with the more sophisticated Torque Vectoring system in the Grande able to also adjust torque distribution between the rear wheels for even more secure traction in all conditions.
Built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the new Kluger delivers a superb balance of ride comfort and handling giving it a premium feel on the road.
That same level of refinement is echoed in the cabin with soft touch materials, clever design and its increased space and versatility comfortably accommodating seven occupants.
The new Kluger features the latest in Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance features including pre collision safety system with pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, emergency steering assist and intersection turn assist on every model.
Added to this are active cruise control – with curve speed reduction function – lane trace assist, blind spot monitor, reversing camera and seven airbags, creating a very comprehensive safety package.
Standard equipment includes smart entry and start, manual front and rear dual-zone air conditioning, rain sensing wipers and automatic lights, and five USB ports.
GXL models gain power heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, power tailgate and satellite navigation for the latest generation multimedia system.

SCULPTED STYLING DELIVERS A POWERFUL PRESENCE
The all-new Kluger presents a powerful and stylish presence on the road with its sculpted appearance and flowing lines delivering a dynamic aesthetic.
With an overall length of 4966mm, the new generation Kluger is 76mm longer and, at 1755mm, is 25mm higher than the previous model.
Although overall width has increased by just 5mm to 1930mm, 20mm wider flared wheelarches give the car a solid grounded appearance.
At the front, that imposing presence is accentuated by the large upper and lower trapezoidal grilles split by the front bumper.
Slimline LED light clusters with integrated daytime running lights are housed atop deep-recessed LED foglights that are integrated into the wider flared front end.
In side profile, the longer body, tapered roofline with integrated rear hatchtop spoiler, gently rising beltline and a glasshouse with blacked out B-pillars all convey dynamic flowing forward movement, even when the car is at a standstill.
The side mirrors have been relocated lower on the door panel to improve forward visibility and reduce blind spots.
Filling the wider wheelarches for the GX grade are large silver metallic 5-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels shod with 235/65R18 tyres.
GXL versions feature a new design 18-inch alloy with a dark grey metallic machine finish that have been designed to not only provide plenty of visual appeal but also improve brake cooling through efficient airflow.
Befitting its range-topping status, Kluger Grande versions employ larger 20-inch Chromtec®1 wheels finish offering a shiny polished chrome appearance.
That same strength of visual purpose is evident at the rear with the wide flared stance, slim LED taillights and large lower skidplate further emphasising the Kluger’s solid, stable and grounded stance.
The rear hatch offers easy access into the expanded luggage space with power operation for GXL variants and a “kick sensor” for the Grande version that allows the hatch to be opened and closed hands-free.
The Kluger’s sculpted lines are about more than a stylish appearance with its sleek exterior, extended and flatter underbody and adoption of spats in front of the wheels contributing to improved aerodynamics.
Complementing the new look of the Kluger is a range of five new exterior colours2 that join the existing Crystal Pearl, Silver Storm metallic and Eclipse Black mica paint finishes.
The new colours include Graphite metallic, Atomic Rush red mica, Liquorice Brown mica, Saturn Blue metallic, and Galena Blue metallic that uses a precious coating process that gives the car a slightly bluish silver hue with increased grain and the solid lustre of clean metal.
KLUGER OFFERS LARGER, MORE REFINED PREMIUM INTERIOR
Clever design, improved packaging and use of premium materials has delivered an all-new Kluger with a cabin that is elegant, refined, spacious and versatile – perfect for the modern family.
Up front, the driver and passenger are greeted with an expansive dash with soft touch surfaces creating an immediate ambience of refinement and premium finish.
The broad horizontal dash – housing the instrument cluster, a large central 8-inch touchscreen display and air conditioning controls and vents – is separated from the lower centre console by a panel that stretches the width of the car providing an open, light and spacious feeling for front seat occupants.
The lower centre console incorporates the transmission lever, drive and AWD mode select switchgear, electronic park brake and two large cupholders, grouping all relevant controls for ease of use.
Ergonomics, ease of use and improved versatility were central to the interior design of the new Kluger and that is evident in the design of the three rows of seating.
Behind the front seats, the second row, three-seat 60/40-split bench sliding range has been increased by 30mm to a total of 180mm, providing improved comfort and increased footwell space for third row occupants.
Access into the second and third row two-seat bench has also been made easier with the fold down levers for both rows now located on the outer shoulder of the seats – which, for the third row seats, also automatically folds the head rests in one action.
Third row passengers benefit from more space too with a 20mm increase in width across the 60/40-split fold seat courtesy of redesigned side trim.
All the seats have improved cushioning for greater comfort and support with GX variants finished in a high-quality fabric upholstery.
The seats in the GXL are finished in synthetic leather, gain heating and power adjustment for the front seats while the top-of-the-range Grande seats gain a quilted leather-accented finish and add cooling ventilation for the driver and front passenger.
While the interior packaging provides a versatile, flexible and user-friendly environment for all passengers, the driver too benefits from clever design that ensures all controls provide clear visibility and fall easily to hand.
Petrol models offer traditional tacho and speedo displays in the instrument cluster that, in GX models, sit either side of a 4.2-inch Multi Information Display (MID) that offers quick visibility over various audio, phone, navigation and vehicle settings.
GXL and Grande versions use a larger 7-inch MID to provide even better visibility of vehicle functions and settings.
Hybrid versions replace the tacho with a hybrid system indicator that enables the driver to check the output and regeneration status of the hybrid system to monitor their driving behaviour and achieve the greatest efficiency.
Management of all phone call, cruise control, audio and some driver assistance features is easily accessed via the fingertip controls on the leather-accented steering wheel.
All models feature the latest generation multimedia system with AM/FM/DAB+1 radio, Bluetooth®2 connectivity, Apple CarPlay®3 and Android Auto™4 compatibility and myToyota apps including Waze®5 and Stitcher™5 (IOS) and WebEx™5 (Android™4).
The Kluger GXL grade adds satellite navigation6 with the Grande versions delivering superb sound reproduction through an 11-speaker premium JBL®5 sound system.
As an SUV, ample storage space is vital and the new Kluger offers a significantly larger luggage space than the previous generation.
The boot space is 50mm longer and 13mm wider providing an increase of 46 litres of luggage space to a total of 241 litres.
With the third row seats folded flat, this increases to 552 litres while folding the second row 60/40-split seat back as well, the Kluger provides a huge 1150 litre capacity.
A removable luggage cover is standard on all models and can be stored neatly under the luggage space deckboard when not in use.
There is plenty of other storage throughout the cabin with a 15-litre lidded centre console box, overhead glasses holder, front door bins with 700ml bottle holders, rear door bins with two 700ml bottle holders and eight cupholders.
HYBRID HEADLINES POWERFUL EFFICIENT DRIVETRAINS
The all-new Kluger introduces a hybrid powertrain for the model for the first time in Australia, making it the eighth Toyota model to offer a powerful, fuel-efficient, petrol electric drivetrain.
The hybrid system is available in all three GX, GXL and Grande grades in combination with the e-Four electric all-wheel drive (AWD) system.
It combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with three electric motor generators – two at the front and one in the rear – and a large Ni-MH hybrid battery to provide seamless performance and traction in all road conditions.
Under the bonnet, the petrol engine generates a maximum power of 142kW at 6000rpm and peak torque of 242Nm at 4400rpm.
With a long stroke and high 14:1 compression ratio, the Atkinson cycle petrol engine is designed for high thermal and fuel efficiency.
The latest D-4S fuel injection system that combines both direct and port injection, and electric variable valve timing (VVT-iE) on the intake and variable valve timing (VVT-i) on the exhaust ports, further enhance efficiency enabling a combined cycle fuel consumption as low as 5.6l/100km1.
The hybrid system delivers a combined maximum power of 184kW through a smooth electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT) that offers driver selectable NORMAL, ECO and SPORT modes.
In SPORT mode, the Kluger’s AWD Integrated Management (AIM) system automatically adjusts throttle control, transmission shift schedule, drive force distribution and electric steering assistance to provide a more dynamic drive experience while ECO mode modifies throttle control and the transmission shift schedule for improved fuel efficiency.
The e-Four AWD system uses a 40kW/121Nm electric motor generator mounted in a rear transaxle to provide additional drive force to the rear wheels in slippery or off-road conditions.
Controlled by the AIM system, drive force can be varied between the front and rear axles depending on conditions and driver behaviour with a torque split front to rear of between 100:0 and 20:80 with an instantaneous readout able to be displayed on the MID in the instrument cluster.
Hybrid AWD models are also fitted with a Trail mode switch for more demanding off-road performance that is able to adjust throttle control, shift schedule, drive force distribution and brake control to deliver optimal traction for the conditions.
In addition to the new hybrid powertrain, the Kluger is also available with an upgraded 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine that is offered in 2WD or AWD configurations in every grade.
While the 3.5-litre V6 engine generates the same maximum 218kW of power and 350Nm of torque as the previous V6 engine, a number of refinements and the addition of a stop/start system have reduced fuel consumption by between 4 and 7 per cent.
The engine refinements include continuously variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust ports, friction reduction measures and improved cooling performance inside the block and cylinder head.
The V6 engine drives through a smooth and responsive 8-speed automatic transmission that offers driver-selectable SPORT, NORMAL and ECO modes that vary throttle control, shift schedules, drive force distribution and steering assistance depending on the mode selected and desired driving characteristics.
In 2WD models, the engine drives the front wheels while there are two AWD systems available depending on the grade.
Kluger GX and GXL models use a Dynamic Torque Control AWD system that is able to split torque between the front and rear axles in a ratio of between 100:0 and 50:50.
For enhanced efficiency and to reduce loss in the AWD system, the system is able to “disconnect” the rear driveline and stop the prop shaft from rotating when AWD is not necessary.
Like the hybrid models, the AWD petrol models also employ the AWD Integrated Management (AIM) system that ensures the engine, transmission, steering, brakes and AWD components all work together to deliver optimum performance and traction depending on the conditions.
For enhanced off-road performance in varied conditions, the AWD Kluger also features a multi terrain select system with Mud & Sand and Rock & Dirt modes that again varies throttle, transmission, torque distribution and brake operations for maximum control.
Kluger Grande AWD petrol models use a more sophisticated Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system that adds two couplings on the rear axle to enable torque to not only be split according to conditions between the front and rear axles, but also between the left and right rear wheels.
This added independent control delivers a greater level of stability during cornering as well as ensuring maximum traction if one of the rear wheels loses contact with the road or track surface.
The AWD system in the Grande version can also be disconnected to improve fuel economy and features the multi-terrain select system that is accessed via a dial control on the centre console.
TNGA PLATFORM DELIVERS SUPERB COMFORT AND DYNAMIC HANDLING
The new Kluger is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform delivering improved ride comfort, handling and dynamic driving characteristics.
With a 60mm longer wheelbase (2850mm) and wider track, 25mm at the front and 30mm at the rear, compared with the previous generation, the new model offers a substantial improvement in driving stability, roadholding and comfort on all surfaces.
Newly developed front and rear suspension comprises a MacPherson strut front and multilink rear arrangement that provides responsive, smooth handling.
To further enhance ride comfort the new Kluger features a Body Control with Torque Demand system that controls drive torque to minimise vehicle pitching due to road surface irregularities.
The system is also able to suppress acceleration and deceleration pitching to minimise up and down movement and improve stability without having to increase suspension damping.
Responsive steering with ample feedback is provided by an electrically-assisted rack and pinion system that features a 20mm increased reach for the manually adjustable steering wheel (reach: 60mm, rake:40mm) to ensure the optimum position for drivers of all sizes.
The new system has also been improved for noise, vibration and harshness with a larger diameter steering shaft for increased rigidity and a new electric motor for the electric assistance.
Providing effective stopping power is a substantially improved brake package with larger 340mm front and 338mm rear discs that are now all ventilated for enhanced performance.
Electronic assistance includes anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution, steering-assisted vehicle stability control, traction control, hill-start assist control and downhill assist control (petrol AWD only).
In addition to this, Toyota has added brake hold and active cornering assist – that brakes the inside front wheel when understeer is imminent – functions to further improve safety and stability.
SAFETY FIRST FOR ALL-NEW KLUGER
As Australia’s favourite family SUV, safety has a been a big priority for the new Kluger with the car featuring a comprehensive suite of the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense1 driver assistance features.
In addition to the inherent improvement in safety due to the Kluger’s enhanced driving behaviour, these features combine advanced radar and camera sensor technology in a fully integrated system to provide a range of autonomous assistance.
Chief among these is the autonomous emergency braking pre-collision safety system that is able to detect pedestrians day and night, cyclists during the day, oncoming vehicles and pedestrians at intersections when making turns, and assist you to take evasive action if there is potential for a collision.
The system provides varying levels of assistance from visual and audible warnings, braking assistance, steering assistance, and full emergency braking if the driver fails to respond.
For added convenience and safety, the new Kluger is fitted with an active cruise control system that operates at all speeds down to a complete stop. The system can be set to maintain a constant speed at a set distance to a vehicle in front and will automatically adjust the Kluger’s speed according to traffic conditions.
When cornering, the curve speed reduction function will also slow the vehicle to an appropriate speed before resuming the driver-set speed as it comes out of the corner.
When the active cruise control is operational, lane trace assist can be activated by a button on the steering wheel and is designed to help keep the vehicle within its own lane, reducing the potential of accidents from fatigue or inattention.
In addition to providing visual and audible alerts if the vehicle moves out of the lane (lane departure alert), it actively keeps the vehicle centred in the lane by providing steering assistance.
The system not only helps by recognising lane markings, but also road boundaries such as grass, dirt or kerbing.
To help drivers keep within the speed limit, the Kluger is fitted with road sign assist that recognises certain speed signs and displays them on the multi information display (MID) in the instrument cluster.
In addition to these Toyota Safety Sense features, the new Kluger is also standard with blind spot monitor that monitors adjacent lanes up to approximately 60m to the rear and alerts the driver if a vehicle is detected.
A rear cross traffic alert will also warn the driver if a vehicle is passing behind, when reversing out of a driveway or parking spot.
The Kluger is also fitted with a number of features that assist the driver to carry out safe parking.
All grades are fitted with front and rear parking sensors and a parking support brake that automatically applies the brakes if there is potential for contact with a static object at the rear of the vehicle, or a vehicle approaching from the side, when reversing at low speeds.
Kluger hybrid models also feature a drive start control function that suppresses excessive or sudden acceleration when shifting the transmission between park, drive and/or reverse.
All models are fitted with a reversing camera, that includes a camera cleaning system activated via the rear screen washer switch.
For Kluger GXL versions, the camera display offers normal and wide-view images and incorporates active guide lines to assist with reverse parking operations.
Grande variants go one step further with a panoramic view monitor that offers a variety of different views depending on the transmission mode selected, including an overhead birds-eye view.
Passive safety features in the new Kluger include a structure and body designed to absorb impacts in a controlled manner and seven airbags – front and front side, full length side curtain and driver side knee.
For easy fitment of child safety restraints, there are ISOFIX anchor points on the second row outboard seats.
