Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry, held a meeting with senior Coal and Power Sector leadership to ensure the consolidation of the Railways coal business and to propose ways and means to enhance the combined operational efficiency of the Coal and Power Sector in the sphere of Coal Freight.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Power, Secretary Coal, Chairman & CEO Railway Board, Heads of CIL, NTPC, Singareni, MCLSECL, CCL, NCL, WCL, ECL, BCCL, NEC, SCCL to analyze the freight operations company wise.

It should be known that almost 50 percent of rail freight is accounted by coal. The overall loading was 587 million tonnes last year. A total of 1210 MTs of freight.

Addressing the meeting, Piyush Goyal stated that Railways made constant efforts to improve freight loading and that on any front there’s no space for any slippages. In order to ensure the optimum shared growth of all three industries, comprising Rail, Power and Coal, the Minister asked for coordinated operations between the Rail, Coal and Power entities.

In a significant turnaround, Indian Railways earned Rs. 9896.86 crores from freight loading in September 2020, which is Rs. 1180.57 crores higher than last year’s earnings for the same duration as well (Rs. 8716.29 crores). There is 13.54 percent of the growth in freight sales with a great opportunity for coal loading to be further enhanced. Increased loading of coal would have a substantial positive effect on revenue from rail freight.

In spite of Covid-related problems and long lock downs, railways are now going all out to exceed last year’s figures on a cumulative basis.

Freight loading for the same period in September 2020 is 15.3 percent more than last year.

Growth is ensured by efforts such as more than 25 policy initiatives setting up Business Development Units at zonal levels, operating both specialised parcel & kisan trains and stronger all-round monitoring.

Indian Railways also offer a range of concessions / discounts to make the movement of railway freight very attractive.
