The Pista is powered by the most powerful V8 in Ferrari’s history and the car uses as much race inspired design and technology that Maranello could cram into it.
Yohan Poonawalla, the car loving Billionaire industrialist has added a special car to his already brimming garage which consists of some very rare cars. He has over the years collected a score of supercars and rare vintage models that he loves to drive around. His latest addition is the Ferrari 488 Pista Spyder that has been customised by him and joins the ranks of a 458 Speciale Aperta, F12 Berlinetta and the Portofino all in the signature Ferrari red-Rosso Corsa.
It comes as no surprise that Mr. Poonawalla also has one of the largest Stud farms in Asia which has provided several champion horses that have won races across the world, his love for the Prancing Italian Horse is no less. In addition he has Lamborghini Gallardo, Mercedes SLS-AMG, a couple of Rolls-Royce Phantoms, Mercedes S600, BMW X6M, Bentley Flying Spur and an extensive vintage car portfolio as well. The Ferrari 458 Speciale Aperta that he owns is also customised and features the letter ‘P’ for Poonawalla on the seats instead of the Ferrari logo which makes it one of a kind, it is also the only Speciale Aperta in India.
Coming to his new car, the 488 Pista Spyder is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.9L V8 which makes a monumental 711 hp and 567lbft of torque which is transferred to the rear wheels with the seven-speed gearbox. The engine is often considered one of the best among the supercars it competes with and has won the engine of the year award for three consecutive years. The gearbox is immediate and has been developed with Scuderia Ferrari, the F1 team for optimum track performance. The body has a front S-duct inspired from F1 as well which helps in increasing downforce, infact Ferrari says that the Pista has the heaviest integration of race technology amongst all road cars they’ve ever made.
The interiors of the Ferrari are a dream to behold, the extensive use of carbon fiber and lightweight materials to keep the weight down is drastic, the design of the cockpit resembles that of a pure-bred racing car, with controls for traction, engine and suspension control on the steering for optimum use. The design has been focused on function to improve performance of the car in tandem with the driver and are therefore oriented towards the driver, and the comforts have been given a back seat but a very stylish one indeed. Alcantara has been used extensively for the interiors along with contrast stitching. It is a track oriented Ferrari and a lot of things are missing, for example the glove compartment, the infotainment screen and even floor carpets have been ditched in an effort to save weight.
This particular Ferrari has also been customised, and features the letter ‘P’ on the mid pillar and on the seats, the plaque inside the car has the words “Specially Built for Yohan Poonawalla” etched onto it, making this Pista Spyder in all essence a one-off car and one which motor enthusiasts among the country will be excited to lay their eyes upon. Mr. Poonawalla also owns several off-road Polaris vehicles in addition to the rare Mercedes-Benz SL 190 Roadster, and a Lincoln Continental Convertible from 1964 that was brought for the Pope Paul VI’s visit and then given to Mother Teresa to raise charity. Even Yohan’s wife, Michelle Poonawalla drives around in a Ferrari Portofino. The Ferrari costs INR 5.41 crore but with the loads of options and customisation the price skyrockets.
