The new Volkswagen Golf GTI is now available for order in the UK, in both manual and DSG versions. The potent and ultra-low emission GTE version of the Golf can now also be configured alongside the eighth generation of the popular GTI hot hatchback. A thrifty 1.0-litre eTSI mild hybrid drivetrain is also added to the list of new Golf models which are now available to order.

New Golf GTI

The 8th generation VW Golf GTI begins at £33,4601 for the 6-speed manual-equipped version and £34,9601 with a quick-shifting 7-speed DSG. With 245 PS and 370 Nm on board from its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, the car achieves 62 mph from a standstill in 6.2 seconds in its fastest, DSG-equipped version. Regardless of transmission, the model will carry on to a maximum speed of 155 mph.

A robust standard equipment package is included with the new Golf GTI, including styling updates, improved comfort features and the newest driver assistance systems. The Golf GTI gets an illuminated grille strip on the front, as well as LED fog lights in the special honeycomb style of the GTI, with IQ. The GTI is given a purposeful look from the side by a set of 18-inch ‘Richmond’ alloy wheels.

Within, the sports seats of the Golf GTI are covered in a new variation of the distinctive Jacara check fabric of the Golf GTI, while the leather-wrapped and adjustable sports steering wheel has paddle shifters for the DSG-equipped model. As standard, there is also a keyless entry and start / stop device, 3Zone climate control and electrically powered, flexible and foldable door mirrors with integrated puddle lights.

New Golf GTE

The plug-in hybrid GTE edition, now available to buyers, compliments the GTI with the same 245 PS power output. Supplemented by 150 PS, 1.4 litres four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a 110 PS electric motor and 13 kWh battery pack, the Golf GTE can power the vehicle up to 32 miles on its own with electric power.

The Golf GTE achieves a top speed of 140 mph with this 245 PS, 400 Nm combination, after a sprint of 0-62 mph is dispatched in 6.7 seconds. The most remarkable of all is the reliability of the Golf GTE: 176.6 mpg on the combined cycle and 36 g / km of CO2 (WLTP) emissions. The Golf GTE is priced at £35,9601.

The Golf 8 GTE’s battery pack is 50 percent bigger, at 13 kWh, compared to the previous Golf GTE, with an available electric-only E-MODE range of 32 miles (WLTP). The GTE offers a purpose-built DSG 6-speed transmission, primarily designed for use with hybrid plug-in models.

A blue GTE badge appears on the grille as well as a blue strip above the light bar. The GTE is distinguished by a blue pattern throughout the interior and exterior. With the Jacara check fabric of the sports seats and steering wheel featuring the same bright blue colour, the theme extends to the interior of the car, all denoting the car’s ultra-low emission, plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Electrically powered, foldable and flexible door mirrors with embedded puddle lights, LED rear lights with dynamic turn signals, plus keyless entry and start all functions, a 3Zone climate control system just as the GTI.

New mild hybrid – the 1.0 eTSI

The 1.0-litre eTSI 110 PS is also available with a new drivetrain for the standard Golf model. Exclusively available on the Golf Life trim, this version has an excellent 54.3 mpg fuel economy and 118 g / km CO2 emissions, making it the most frugal petrol-only option in the Golf 8 series, as well as the most economical option fitted with DSG, at £25,1901.

In 10.2 seconds, with a maximum speed of 126 mph, the Golf eTSI hits 62 mph from a standstill. In order to improve fuel efficiency, the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine uses the Miller combustion mechanism and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, while the mild hybrid configuration requires a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a 48-volt belt starter generator.

“The Golf GTI is 45 years in the making, with numerous awards over those four-and-a-half decades under its belt and millions of fans the world over,” said Dale Piper, Golf product manager at Volkswagen UK. “The moment has come for the latest Golf GTI to open for order to UK customers. This is a key market for the Golf, and in particular for performance Golfs. With impressive acclaim from critics already, we’re confident that the new Golf GTI and, through electrification, the GTE will continue this success.”
