The new Yaris GR was launched in Tokyo today by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division in Tokyo, while the car is already on sale with dealers across the country, Toyota has decided to hold an online event named GR Yaris Online FES, this will be a virtual reality event hosted on 16th of September. Fans will be able to access virtual images which will include information about the design and development of Yaris GR in the form of a story and additional information about the GR factory. Toyota boss Akio Toyoda will drive the Yaris GR and with the help of VR offer viewers an opportunity for a drive along.
The new Yaris GR has been extensively developed with inputs from the Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT( World Rally Team), making the car easy to drive for a novice while also being capable of posting WRC level lap times in the hands of a capable driver, a number of non-Toyota professionals were also consulted in the development of the car.
Akio Toyoda, also referred to as Master driver Morizo when he’s behind the wheel, desired to “restore the Toyota sports cars”, to bring about a tectonic shift in how Toyota racing division works. Hence the reverse engineering used for the development of the GR Yaris, wherein the motorsports car was turned into a road-legal production car.
The car has several improved features over the previous generation, which include lightweight and highly rigid body while being aerodynamic. The new 1.6 liter in-Line three cylinder engine which is turbocharged channelling power to all four wheels using a system named GR Four, a sportier four wheel drive system which incorporates a variable front-rear driving system to distribute power according to need and front and rear limited slip differentials.(Some of the features may only be available on the RZ and RC versions) The car comes in 3 models, a base high performance version named RZ, the calmer RS for the daily fun enthusiast and the competitive RC edition.
An exclusive production line has been established at the Motomachi Plant named the GR factory, where each sport model from Toyota is produced, thus intending to inculcate the skills of the master craftsmen, the Takumi.
Toyota has planned to host the VR event at 7:30pm local time on 16th of September, the event can be viewed via Toyota GR’s youtube channel and website.
