Artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear Virgil Abloh and Mercedes-Benzes, headed by Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener, has introduced their first collaboration- Geländewagen. The car design project reimagines the Mercedes-Benzes G-class as a racecar, unsettling future discernments of luxury. The design procedure was enthused by Wagener and Abloh owning and experiencing the G-class first hand. aTogether, they measured how to make the customers aspect the Mercedes-Benz look with a new perception, while driving luxury away from an elegant and spotless art to something, which can be natural, ordinary, and candid.
For Geländewagen, the exterior was kept as hygienic as required to emphasize the profile of the Mercedes-Benzes G-class, representing its colossal feature. The final project has set its structural methods unadorned and celebrated the handcrafted inadequacies that make it exclusive. The paintwork was somewhat smoothed by hand to make a sense of ageless beauty. Meanwhile, the indicators, outside mirrors, and the bumper bar have all been detached and to provide it with more with of a sportier effect, the body was broadened and lowered.
Talking about its inside artwork, the car is more of a racer than a typical SUV. All the interiors have been stripped back, and the protection frame became the essential idea. The dashboard is detached and substituted with a hygienic, condensed version, which showed an analog speedometer and fuel gauges. This contrasted with the steering wheel and seats, which are more akin to a formula 1 vehicle. The significant elements and other characteristics, such as the security frame or the five-point seat belts, are stressed in baby blue and bright red tones.
The ‘Project Geländewagen’ has brought the worlds of fashion, art, and automotive engineering altogether. “My ultimate goal in this project with Mercedes-Benzes is inspiring young artists, engineers, designers to question the status quo, in addition to experimenting with my own design abilities,” explained Virgil Abloh. “For me, it’s all about providing opportunities for those coming after me and giving this next generation a foundation for success, both here with Mercedes-Benzes and through my own Virgil Abloh “post-modern” scholarship fund.”
“With project Geländewagen, we create a unique artwork that showcases future interpretations of luxury and the desire for beauty and the extraordinary. The result is something between reality and future,’ continued Garden Wagener, Mercedes-Benzes chief design officer. ‘The collaboration with Virgil has seen two distinct design philosophies unite, for a one-of-a-kind re-imagination of the g that continues to celebrate the extraordinary at its core.”
“Project Geländewagen perfectly encapsulates Mercedes-Benzes manifestation of contemporary luxury, pushing creativity and innovative design,’ added Bettina Fetzer, vice president marketing at Mercedes-Benzes AG.
“Culture and the arts have always played an important part in both Mercedes-Benzes products and the brand, and we are proud to donate all proceeds of the replica auction to support international creative communities to continue their education in the arts.”
A model of the design will be auctioned as part of Sotheby’s contemporary curated — one of the auction house’s most respected series, which is well defined by the exclusive perception of an altered persuasive tastemaker every year. All profits will be offered to a charity that funds International Creative Communities. Also, the advanced bidding will begin on September 14, 2020.
