The smaller sibling of the GMC Sierra receives some mechanical and protective updates for extra off-road capability.
GMC has given the very capable Canyon AT4 an upgrade with the Off-Road Performance Edition which packs a much more capable off-road package. The AT4 trim level of the mid-size pickup added upgraded suspension and off-road mechanics to the Canyon, and the addition of this edition takes it a notch higher. In words of GMC Marketing Director Rich Latel, “When customers are looking for a capable off-road truck, we know that they want improved vehicle height as well as additional protection while still delivering a premium GMC experience.”
The Off-Road Performance edition does precisely that, takes the already beefed up Canyon AT4 and makes it better. The truck has a Suspension Leveling kit, performance Front and middle skid plates for protection, rocker panel protector amongst others and cosmetic updates that include the unique carbon black wheels, Black AT4 logos and floor liners. The AT4 also has Eaton G80 locking rear differential which makes tackling treacherous terrain easy with the 31in Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac off-road tyres, while hill-descent is made easy with a standard control system.
The Performance Edition adds the suspension leveling kit, which is useful to keep the vehicle level in extremely uneven terrain and removes the front air dam improving the approach angle to thirty degrees. The front is bolstered with rocker panels for protection along with the new skid plates, which are made from aluminum.
The powerhouse for all the off-roading is the 3.6L V6 which churns out 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque which is sent to all the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The suspension of the AT4 is heavily tuned and raises the vehicle substantially, made especially for off-road use, which combined with the massive 31in tyres make for excellent grip in mud, snow, sand or rocky conditions.
The interiors of the AT4 are also rugged, while being comfortable, AT4 branded leather seats are resistant to heavy and rough use. The infotainment system is a 8in touch, which can be paired with a 4G hotspot feature for connected services, Apple Carplay and Amazon Alexa compatibility. MyGMC smartphone app can be installed for a better user experience.
The Prices for the Performance edition haven’t been announced yet, The GMC Canyon AT4 costs about $39,900 (INR 29L).
