Among the rarest of American muscle cars, this Cougar GT-E is arguably one of the finest example of its species. Not a single part was ignored in this meticulously thorough rotisserie restoration, the goal of which from the onset of the build was to recreate a new 1968 Cougar GT-E. The scheduled build date in Dearborn for this particular Cougar was February 29, 1968, but as 1968 was a leap year, actual production occurred a little over a week later on March 9.
A little over 50 years later, the car was discovered in a heated Wisconsin barn in 2019; incredibly well preserved under a thick layer of dust, this rare cat had been untouched for more than 30 years. After 15 months and 2,200 hours of work on the car, the painstakingly thorough restoration was completed—not a single part was ignored or overlooked, including the many parts that may never be seen again, with each restored to an incredible level of excellence. Attention to detail is evident with every step, and the restoration is fully documented with high-resolution photos and a stack of receipts, all of those records included with the car.
There are fewer than a dozen of these Mercury Cougars still in existence with their original drivetrain, and less than half of those are in running order; none are restored to this level of detail. Sporting a Madras Blue exterior with a Light Aqua interior, the Cougar is one of only four ever produced (with just three known to exist today) with this color and trim combination, but as a “Standard w/Decor pkg” (a non-XR7), the car is believed to be the only ever built exactly like it.
